    Hi all..

i have an intel pentium4(regular)and crappy stock compaq mobo(i have a compaq presario desktop computer) with 256 rambus ram....the game i play is world of warcraft and i get massive hard drive thrashing and i need to upgrade my mobo/ram...what intel mobo should i get and what ram to go with it?

help me choose the gear without breaking the bank=)

anyone know if compaq presario 6600 is atx?

i need a mobo without onboard video but one with onboard sound that doesnt sap my cpu.

would a sata hard drive be good? which brand/model is reliable and performance?

any info would be nice.happy halloween

Your machine will take a max of 1GB memory.

Sorry, but you are better off building a machine for gaming and keep the Presario 6600 for Internet browsing. There is really no way to upgrade the Compaq, due to the PowerSupply would not handle the video card, and the back of the case will not fit the backside connectors on other motherboards.

you might try defragging your hard drive with a third party defragger like diskeeper or O & O and setting your page file to a static size rather than the default. if it's thrashing alot, that could cause your drive to break and I don't think you'd want that :p

i was able to install a stronger power supply and maybe it would be possible to remove that side plate where the connectors go...i would have to make some modifications maybe=)

i was wondering if the compaq mouse/keyboard connectors would go with an asus motherboard or would i need to replace them with some generic setup?

    dude compaq sucks=(

i was able to get a geforce video card to work but the latch on the stock mobo doesnt even lock down the crad all the way..lol

the current mobo has onboard video/audio and rambus ram...hehe

is asus good for intel pent4 processor? would the budget corsair 512mb ram be good for it?

once i read "rambus" i cringed and made an oww and ouch noise. RD ram from my experiences is HORRIBLE. and on topof that its more expensive then DDR or SD.. my 1ghz P3 256MB SDRAM 32MB Geforce 2 was ALOT better then my brothers 1.4ghz P4 256MB RDRAM 32MB Geforce 2.

lol i know...i think its time for an upgrade...just would like some help in choosing a motherboard and ram for an online gaming system.

like whats the best intel mobo for around 100 bucks and best ram for 100 bucks?

so far i have found asus mb and corsair ram..are they reliable and good performance?

Asus motherboards are good, but you are not going to get a good motherboard for $100.00, and $100.00 will not get you the RAM needed for what you need for a gaming system.

You are looking around $799.99-$1300 for a good gaming system.
