    I have a PC with Win 98:
    3.5 disk drive
    CD read only

    2nd PC with XP:
    3.5 disk drive
    CD read only

Is there anther way other then putting what will fit on a 3.5 disk?
I tried to install an ext HD onto the Win 98 but it would not work.
    Any ideas.

First off, you'll need to give us more info about your computers. i.e. Make/Model of either the computer or the individual components, such as: motherboard, hard drives, cpus, and exactly which version of Win98? If you don't know, you can download a program that will tell you everything you need to know here:

Now, the cheapest way would be to take the hard drive out of the one computer and install it into the second computer. Then you can just copy from one hard drive to the other. Or, you could get your external hard drive working. (you might need some drivers to use it on Win98) Or, you could install network interface cards (if you don't already have them installed) and set up a network and transfer files that way. Or, you could get a CD-RW drive and do it that way. All of them are pretty easy and fairly cheap.

They both have network interface cards (Ethernet cards). How would I transfer
the files from one PC to the other?

You need a CROSSOVER ethernet cable to plug into the NICs. This connects the output from one pc to the input of the other.
    Get a blanl floppy
    Plug the cable in
On the XP pc insert the blank floppy then go to
    start>programs>accessories>communications>network setup wizard
click next and follow the instructions.
Allow the wizard to create a setup floppy on your blank
    click finish.

Run the wizard on the other pc to set that one up.

    restart both pcs.
Don't forget to label the folders you want to transfer as shared - richt click on them in explorer and choose sharing.

somewhat related...i recently got a new hard drive, and my old one was a mess anyway, so i just did a fresh format and install of xp. however, there are a lot of files on the old drive i'd like to transfer to the new drive. if i had another pc, i'd simply put the old drive in it, and transfer over my network. since i don't have another pc, i need to know how to get those files transferred. when i connect and enable the old drive, it boots into the windows installation that's on the old drive, since both have a "C"...maybe there's a way to change it's drive letter, wipe the boot.ini, or something? i'd like to be able to do this without having to buy an external enclosure...any help would be greatly appreciated
    thanks in advance,
    jeff

Welcome to Major Geeks, elheffe. I think it is likely your query will take several posts, so perhaps a moderator will move this to your own thread????????

    Anyway here's a start.
We need to know more about your sytem and level of knowledge as it would seem to be a configuration issue. Is the new drive SATA? Can you look in the BIOS and post whether the boot order lists IDE 0,1 2...etc? There are normally two IDE header sockets on a motherboard, have you connected one hard drive to each? How have you set the hard drive jumpers?

I assume that your old Windows is corrupt so when you say it boots to the old windows you can't simply copy your old data files over? It may be possible to recover the old windows sufficiently to do this. Have you run check disk and the system file checker?

    Over to you

nevermind...just borrowed a laptop...booted to the old drive, copied everything to the laptop, formatted the old drive, then moved the files back from the laptop. the problem i was running into was that the old drive was on IDE0, new was IDE3 (sata), so it was booting to the first, ide0...anyway, thanks for the welcome, studiot, and while i don't look forward to needing your help, i do look forward to receiving it in the future :)

Glad you both got it sorted.
Elheffe don't forget that formatting you drive will have removed any malware but run checks on the data you have put back. And please start your own thread next time, you will be very welcome.
