I realize that there is a lot of updates going on as of late and I also know that virus makers are also busy at 'work' too....

I am doing an install, and have noticed along the way, a ms dos application entited www.msn with a size of 1kb in my documents folder.
this machine is a windows media center pc xp /pro/ I guess....
2gb of memory a 200+gb hd. it's in good shape.
I have attaced a screen shot of the folder and am actively looking for any information about this file.
and input would be greatly appreciated
also, I tried to tell avast to scan the file, and of course it comes on, and goes right off.....

    Hi

Not come across that one before so I would delete that file and then run the guide below and attach the logs.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

Yes an AV scan will be rapid as that file is only 1kb, so will scan faster than a blink of an eye, but delete and run the above to be sure.

well...I've deleted the file...and did the scans....I have another one to run....nothing found so far....

question...3computers in my home and I wonder....If one computer becomes affected by malware and whatnot, will it 'jump' from one computer to one of the others on the network?

    Hi frierc,
If you're still working on the same computer we worked on recently, then it would be better to keep everything in that one thread.
Malware can travel among computers which share files like in a home network. It won't go from one computer to the next just because they share a router.

    very interesting.....
I am seriously considering re installing the os on all three cpu's and starting from scratch.... I am very concerned about internet safety and I realize that I in the past have visited what I was told was a safeporn site occasionally, I think if I want safety, then I'll have to wipe clean and stay away from those sites(however few they are) and :crypossibly not installing/taking a chance with any P2Papplication...
I have read somewhere that if you visit one of these sites that if a pop up comes up or if the site wants you to install any media player, then it's quiet possible that your machine will then be affected and I've seen both happen.
I truely believe and see now that internet safety all depends upon the users ability to stay away from suspicious sites.....

and also, is file and printing sharing just simply not safe at all?
my other two computers are used by my kids and they do homework on them and they often times use file and printer sharing with my help, to print homework assignments....

    Hi frierc,
Why did you remove the HijackThis log and newfiles.txt? The tools are made so they run and produce a zipped set of logs so all you have to do is upload the zip file. It would be easier of rme to look at it that way so I can tell you if your computer is in danger or not. So far, since your first thread, you've not had any malware problems but I can't give you any good answer until I can look at your logs.
