MS Security Center says Antivirus is Turned Off

I am running Symantec Antivirus Corporate 10.0.2.2000. First off should I get a new program. I got this free from someone I used to work with a few years back and just don't really have the cash to spend on a antivirus program right now.

Second, I had some issues a while back with the Virtumonde virus and during removal somehow its screwed up the works a bit. Now I get notifications from Microsoft Security Center telling me Symantec is turned off and everytime I boot up I get a small pop-up from Symantec telling me auto-protect is disabled. However, when I go into Symantec auto-protect is checked off. I have also noticed that after I boot up a couple minutes will go by and I will get that strange prompt noise like when a program has an issue (I hope I am making sense and you know what I mean), but there is not pop-up on my screen. It just makes the noise in the background. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
