    Dear Major Attitude,

I am new to the forum, but I am trying to help my Mom out with her PC and spyware/adware/viruses she has.

I was looking at your READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT document and I am a little confused.

Under the Scanning And Cleaning Steps section, Item 3, you suggest two online virus scanners.

The confusion I have is that your previous 2 steps are talking about tasks while being booted in Safe Mode.

Then you talk about running McAfee AVERT Stinger, followed by performing an online scan.

Then you later say (between item 6 & 7) that the final 2 Optional steps require you to reboot back to Normal Mode.

Don't you need to be in Normal Mode to connect online and run one of the online virus scanners?

With Windows 2000 and Windows XP there is a safe mode with Networking option that allows you to have network access even in safe mode.

Had the same thing when we followed the steps. Unable to connect in safe mode. Skipped that, did it after restart. Also, some of the things listed as run without installation didn't seem to be that way. Had some confusion on the trend micro's site also, but eventually found the free online scan. Helpful for us, printed out all instructions & marked off as we went, made notes. Appreciate the help though, even though a little confusing at time, worth working through.

    Hi,
Thanks for the feedback Lori_mom and sorry to take so long to respond net4ward. As Kodo said, you need to choose safe mode with networking support. I will modify the tutorial to explain that you need to select that mode. Very good catch! I will also recheck Trend to make sure it is working properly and easy to use. We recently removed the Panda scanner from that list because people were having trouble with it as far as user friendlieness goes.

One downside to the tutorial is we try and write it for any virus, trojan, spyware programs so there are a lot of steps. McAffee Stinger was recently added as an option because it only targets certain popular viruses. BUT, for someone who can not boot into safe mode, it may save them. So, in other words, odds are there are a couple steps in there most people do not NEED, but since there is no way to write a tutorial for every problem, it does not hurt to run the extra steps either.

If you have any other feedback (or anyone else) please, do not hesitate. I dont know of problems or difficulties without your feedback :)

Modified safe mode description explaining going into safe mode with networking support and why it is important.

Modified Trend online scanner link to make it right to the start scanning page.

Only other thing I can think of is to recommend they print the instructions (including instructions for disabling System Restore) and keep track of what they have done & what happened. With so many scans & the amount of time it takes to get thru it all, without the instructions & making notes as we went, I think we would have forgotten something, or been confused as to what each was going to do, and what happened. You are a great help to those of us that are computer users, but don't know alot about what we are using ;)
