Multi-link (I think) via two phone lines

Ok this is going to sound crazy, but because I'm stuck in dial up hell, and looking desperately for anything that will make my 56k modem actually work at that speed, I have to ask. An IT guy working on a computer in our department today suggested I link two phone lines together and run them via a single piggy back to my modem. His theory is that by doing this it will improve the speed with which I connect to the internet. My unprofessional opinion is that this is impossible. However, since I am not a MajorGeek and not an IT professional, I just HAVE to know if its possible. Needless to say my brain is fried at this point trying to figure out the logistics of this.

Its possibly just not fun to setup and your isp must offer multi link technology and probably will charge more.
