multi pop up & task manager virus HELP!

Hi, my friend has a virus that has absolutely screwed his pc, basically when he runs internet explorer pop ups constantly appear about 50 within a minute, they stop around 60 or so, but cannot be closed as they constantly reappear, and the virus has done something to his task manager and when he presses ctrl alt del, task manager is all blank and has parts of it missing, with everything in top left corner, with only applications accesible, not proccesses. We have tried stop zilla and spybot and norton, to no avail, can anyone PLEASE help us out!

First download Ad-aware from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
Do not run yet scan yet.
With the application running click the Check for updates now button to update reference list.
Then set it up to perform a full scan. Use this instructions:
