I took my small tape player and pluged it in to the microphone slot of the sound card and was able to record 60 seconds of music using windows's recorder , but what I am trying to figure out is how to take the whole song and get it on to a computer and then onto a cd
If any one has any ideas please let me know

Get a program like "audacity" and you should be able to record the whole song just like you did with windows recorder .

    Link to audacity homepage

Used to rip tapes and burn them to cd by using a program called media jukebox (It will let you rip tapes).

With this program you can rip the whole song.
