here is what i did to kill popups and crazy shyt on my cable modem connected computer:

got zonealarm, set IE to have no internet permissions -- since most spyware shyt uses IE, and use netscape witht he anti-popup thing turned on.

i dont want to **** with any more stuff on my comp just to fight spyware/spamware, and i like netscape better than IE anyways.

    comments?

I guess another solution would be to just stop browsing the internet, huh?

Theres always exploits, but you can do whatever you want to combat them. Popup blockers, cookie cleaners or blockers, Opera without Java and so on. Long as your happy. Me, I use Avant Browser which has popup blocking, Zone Alarm for a firewall, AVG for anti-virus and do an occasional spyware scan.

No, there are commas in the sentence, maybe I wrote it wrong :) Avant has popup blocking and other features, but the rest is a list of security related items i use :)

:) Under Security settings in IE you have to disable items related to ActiveX and Java (or at most check the Prompt option).
I also use AVG anti-virus, Zone Alarm Pro (with high security settings), Ad-aware, Spybot, and occasionally run F-prot and Trend Micro anti-virus (the latter being integrated in Fix-it Utilities).
I get no pop-ups, but sometimes have to lower the security settings in ZoneAlarm to open the page.

i tried one of those anti-spy ware programs that searches your whole system -- somehow it royally screwed my shyt up (dont remember what it did) and i ended up having to use system restore to fix it.

sometime you have to be careful. most (if not all) modify the registry, so you have to be sure that what you are removing is ok to remove.

Hey... remember the thread we discussed spyware removers in? How it could mess up the TCP/IP stack? A lot of us also said that whatever Ad-Aware found, we removed. Just kinda wondering about that. I've had no problems, myself... I have had some incidents with registry scanners and the like... but spyware removing utilities have never given me problems.

Problem is, like popup blockers, there is good and bad. Ad-Aware and Spybot are the only ones you need. Ad-Aware is super safe and so is Spybot, though Ad-Aware seems a bit more conservative to me.

Popup blockers are apparently programming 101 since theres a ton of them, but you need an INTELLIGENT popup blocker. Lots of places open legitimate windows, like our screenshots as an example, but some popup blockers simply block all and can cause other difficulties.

One reason we dont offer popup blockers here is because most of them are shareware. We find it odd that someone wants to write such a simple program to stop many legitimate websites from making money, yet they want you to pay THEM for it.

Hahahahaha... I'm in total agreement with you there... like Earthlink's pop-up blocker... it does exactly what you say... it blocks all pop-ups, no matter what they are. It gives you the option to ctrl+click to open the link without blocking it, though... but I think the reason they want money for it, is because they know how annoyed people get with pop-ups and that they'd pay money to be rid of the nuecence.

I know websites (such as MG) need to make money from popups, I do feel slightly guilty for blocking them here.

    but... I hate them.

To follow on from the last two posts, I use Opera because it has an option "Open requested popups only". Agreed, some things like ICQ 2GO don't open automatically, but most sites have a link saying click here if your (download, etc) does not open automatically.

I'm sticking with Opera for a while!

I'll make you some if you want MA. Have it have a list that allows you too choose what windows get closed?
reason they are so easy is cause anyoen with a BASIC understandign of the messaging windows uses can place a callback to have windows call it everytime it opens a window , can compare the name of the window <ie Majorgeeks Message Board - my cheezy lil anti-pop-up/spyyware popup solution...-Microsoft internet explorer.

Select fro ma list of open windows what you dont want to allow to stay open, run program and wham would close it.

I just need couple hours where i'm not sleeping or working heh
