Currently, when I double-click on My Computer, nothing happens. Same thing when I click on any folder, and on Windows Explorer also. I just searched my computer with Nortons, and it didn't find anything. I just got rid of eZula, but my computer is still slow. My Resource Meter reads "System: 55%, User: 58%, GDI: 55%". They are all usually around 80% - 85%. Even while I am typing this, it has about a 3 second hang before the words actually appear. While I was typing this, I scanned my computer with Ad-Aware 6, and it found 46 items! I removed all of them, and My Computer nor any folders are opening still. I will upload the log somewhere if you want to see it. If anyone could help, thanks.

    Stats:
    Win 98 SE
    HP Pavilion, Model: XE743
Nortons 2002, updated every 3 days.

Does it work in Safe Mode?

Lemme go try to put it in Safe Mode. Lemme figure out first, this computer is a lot different then any others I have put in Safe Mode before.

    Its pretty universal.

Press f8 before it boots into 98.

Sorry bout that, I had a few things to do. Yes, everything is in working order in Safe mode.

Try disabling startup items in msconfig. If that works, narrow down which startup item is doing it.

Hey, I unchecked everything under the Startup tab in MSConfig. Still have the problem (and yes I rebooted). I don't know what else it can be. My AAW didn't pick up anything new, nor did nortons. I will be back on here in 2 hours. Thanks

    Using IE6?

Go to Internet Options, advanced tab.

Uncheck "Enable third party browser extensions"

    Those affect IE and explorer.exe.

Quite welcome, but that is more a workaround.

I still suspect spyware on your system.

Well, I did run Ad-Aware 6 3 times so far, got rid of 52 files all together. I should be clear of most adware, but I will download a couple more prgrams to search my computer. Thanks for the help again

Hm, it did seem I was having the same problem like vaosu. I followed all your suggestions. I do have all the updates, no virus or anything on this machine. Now my computer starts up ok, but gets stuck in every application and the message "blah blah NO RESPONSE" appears. Any suggestions? The computer runs just fine in "safe mode".

BTW, I am running Win XP and I am connected to a LAN.

    Thanks for you help.

    Hi,
what version of XP are you running?the home edition has loads of bugs still, it would bre better if you had XP Pro a better running enviroment all together. further more have a look at your registry settings. Better still post the error message here and we can see if we can sort it here.

    Hi,
Just a thought, Have you scandisked the main drive and then used disk defragmenter?
it a basic proceedure, should be done on a regular basis.

I am running Win XP Pro. The error message just states "no response" in every application and I end up manually turning the computer off.
I also did run Ad-aware 6, regcleaner, AntiVir, Search $destroy Bot, Stinger etc. They are not coming up with anything.
The computer ran just fine a few weeks ago, when the other one had a virus. So I installed all these preventive programs and now the computer doesn't do anything any longer, but starting up and that's it.
