I have clocked my cpu temp at 122F. this is something that is bothering me. Id like to know what I could do to lower my cpu's temp. also, how exactly does the increase temperature of the cpu effect the overall performance, and, would that effect my computer as a whole? just thougt id ask. thanks.

If your CPU is getting too hot, then you sacrifice stability and often speed as well, so it pays to keep your processor cool. 122F is pretty good if you are running at stock speeds with an AMD Athlon, but its probably a bit high for a P4, if i remember rightly.

To lower the temperature, you can try getting a new heatsink for your processor, and/or getting some higher quality thermal paste, like Arctic Silver. You might also want to make sure your case as a whole has good airflow, by playing intake and exhaust fans at the front and back respectivley (in at front, out at back).

Nothing helps more than a simple cleaning of all the dust inside the case. Intel recommends a maximum temp for P4 processors at 40C.

IF AMD nothing to worry about, my kill point for my AMD is 85C overclocked it only runs about 41C I do have three fans, and a heat sink though AMD Athlon XP 2800+ .

holy crap! My P4 STARTS OFF at 48C o_O and it can get as high as 150F and still run fine o_O My case gets so hot that it burns my flesh when I touch it. :( I think at this point adding a new case fan isn't going to do a heck of a lot of good. Any one have an suggestions about how I might lower the amount of heat being produced? As for air flow I got a new power source and the thing has so many freaking wires that air flow is probably worse now than it was before :( There is no where at the front of my case to add a fan or even an intake so if I were to do that I'd have to make a place myself :p I'm seriously worried about my computer.

What is your kill point on your processor? you say you run as high as 65C are you overclocking?

Where is your case located? is it hidden? Sounds like you need to get a new case I run three Fans and my case has punch out for two more if I needed them, I got it for $40 Do you use a heat sink?

I am not familiar with Intel products, I only use AMD, and built my own computers. I always buy a case that has more punch outs then I need just incase I want to upgrade.

You could use a floor fan, to cool your processor until you get a new case or remove the case itself, what is the room temp in your house where the pc is? Room temp can also make a difference, 65C is hot, my AMD can take up to 85C but I would worry if it hit 60C.

I'm pretty certain that there is a heat sink over my cpu but not totally. I baught some crappy thing from the store and I've been modding it ever since I got it. It now runs fine and stable with an upgraded PSU and new graphics card now I need to get the temp down. I have no fans in the thing but would a couple of case fans really make that much of a difference in the cpus temp? I went ahead and moved my question to another post if you want to reply there :) And thanks for the interest btw

Something is majorly wrong with your setup or your overclocking. Clean up those wire first of all. Use zip-ties to tuck away the unused wires in the corner of the case, or do what I do. I have my top bay empty on my case and I stuffed all the extra wires there. I also zip-tied a bunch of my power wires together to form on long wire that fits perfectly in length to where my devices are.

Also think about getting rounded cables and make sure your case fans are actually exposed to the outside of the case. A fan behind some plastic slits does squat compared to an actuall blowhole that's sucking in or blowing out 100% of the air it moves.

BTW - what is your case's ambient temperature inside. also, if you're really desperate you could just take the side panel off your case and that should keep your temps fairly low.

That will be the system temperature, no way in hell are you gonna keep a P4EE/P4 Prescott core lower than 40c on a Air Type Cooler.

LOL, I keep my case nice and cool by leaving one side off, I just have to be careful speaker wires don't get in there and short something out!
