My god I am clueless help ?

Ok I am kinda pc clueless. I need to convert a divx avi cdr to a mpeg cdr. I have looked untill my eyes bleed on tucows and those sites for a free program that will do this. I cannot find one at all. They are free to try but you have to buy ? Does anyone know of a link or program that is free so that I can do this ?? I have a progressive dvd player but it will not support divx so my son cannot watch his movie on the tv in our living room. At 3yrs old this can be a problem. I do not have dvd burning software. I only have a dvd rom but have a cd burner drive also. I use sonice to burn cdrs. Any help would be great
