My HotKeys Don't Work

Not sure if they're hot keys, but what I mean is that all the buttons that use "FN" no longer work...which means my volume, brightness, etc. I feel like I accidentally removed it from my start-up when I was trying to speed up my computer...but now I don't know how to get it back. Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Stephanie

P.S. Along the same lines, when the drop down list appears when clicking a toolbar (ie. "FILE") - many of the items (like Print, Save As, etc) have one letter underlined. What does that mean? In fact, the tool bar headers even have one letter underlined. I thought it was a hotkey or something, but then there are some with "Ctrl +N" next to it. Always wanted to know...

the 'FN' key? not sure what that is unless you are using a laptop? If so try pressing SHIFT + ScrLk (scrolll lock) key to see if it helps.

For the other question: the underlined characters mean by using the alternate key (ALT) plus the underlined character you could active that menu option. These are generally known as application combo/hot keys.
    Examples:
ALT + F = opens the File menu (IE top menu bar)
ALT + E = opens the Edit menu

    did this help?

PS, some hot-key combos use CTRL key to which is typical to Windows environment.
    Examples:
    CTRL + X = to cut currently high-lighted item/text/etc.
    CTRL + C = to copy currently high-lighted item/text/etc.
    CTRL + V = to paste previously cut/copied item/text/etc.

    Sounds like a laptop.

Have you checked to see if the hotkey software/drivers are still installed?

Hey you two, thanks so much for the replies. I didn't get a notification, so all of this time, I thought I was going unanswered.

    1. Yes, I'm on a laptop.
    2. Thanks for the ALT explaination...that makes sense and will be useful.
    3. I don't know how to check if the hotkeys/drivers are installed.
    4. the scroll lock works if I want to turn my letters into numbers, but nothing else.

Would love any more advice. STephanie

Whats the make of your Laptop? check manufacturers site for drivers as for some reason yours may have become corrupt.

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-R505GL. I wanted to reiterate that I remember seeing a "hotkeys" at startup and I removed it not knowing what it was and that's when they stopped working. I looked into the program that I thought I used (Reg Cleaner) but it didn't have it there in the backup. anyway I can get it back or find out if it's in my computer and just needs to be setup again?

I figured it out. I had everything installed, just needed to click on them to start it again. Thanks for your help :)
