My pc locked me out (or I made him do it)

    Hi there,

I can't access windows. Story is as follows.

I was updating my java software and also trying to remove some malware. When I was asked if I wanted to reboot so as to complete java uninstall I said no. Then installed new java.
Then I went on to do the spyware cleaning and rebooted in safe mode (here I was following instructions from malware, but the operation performed was so minor it seems most unlikely that's the source of the problem).

Since then I can't access windows. My password (the only one I ever had) doesn't work eventhough the username is correct, and I don't get an option to enter an administrator password either.

In F8 menu I've tried to run windows in many different ways, from normally to loading the last known configuration that worked, but windows will not get out of safe mode whatsoever. I will list the options translated, more or less literally:

    1 Safe mode
2 Safe mode with network functions
3 Safe mode with symbol system

    4 enable start up registry
    5 Enable VGA mode
6 Last good configuration known (last one that worked)
7 restore SD mode (only control of windows domain)
    8 Purge mode
9 Disable automatic start up if there's a system error

    10 Boot windos normally
    11 Reboot
12 Go back to OS options menu

Now I'll list the ones I've used already:

    1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 10, 11

When booting in modes 1,2 and 3...
I can see a very fast list if items loading. Too fast to see exactly what they are. I can see separated words: multi/partition/drivers/. They are not error messages.
Then I see a message than sais "press esc not lo load SPTD.sys". After a little while it disappears and I arrive to the black safe mode screen and the enter password dialogue that will not let me in.

When booting 4, 6 ,10 and 11 I simply arrive straight to the password dialogue in safe mode.

When loading 7 I see the fast list of items loading I mentioned before. Then a blue windows screen saying Safe mode is being loaded. Then a black screen with message that C is being scanned and that there are no errors in C. Then Safe Mode Password dialogue.

Also, If a press F2, before entering the BIOS menu I get to see a message that sais the following:

    -sistem video shadowed
    -video bios shadowed
    -Rom passed
    -Cache passed

Inside the Bios menu, the Boot tab shows the following secuence:

    -Hard Drive
    TOSHIBA MK8025GAS-(PM)

    CD-ROM/DVD Drive

    -Removable devices
    Legacy Floppy Drivers

    Network Boot

The dash indicates that the item below belongs to the one above.

so the problem is my password will not work, and Windows will not get out of safe mode no matter what. I don't have a Windows boot disc. Is there anything I can do?????

Try this while in Safe Mode:

    1.) Go Start, Run
    2.) Type in "msconfig.exe."
3.) This will give you the msconfig screen.
4.) Click the BOOT.INI tab and unselect the /SAFEBOOT check box.
    5.) Restart your computer.

The above should prevent your computer from booting into Safe Mode

Do you have a manual for the MOBO? If so there should be a jumper you can reset that clears the password. You can try, but I don't know that it will work, remove the battery for about 20 minutes. This will clear the CMOS and reset the bios but may or may not clear password. If you do not have the MOBO manual post your MOBO brand and model and we can look it up for you.

That sounds like something... but what is it? Please explain.

    Hey that's ok, Kniht.

Truly, thanks to you both for posting.

    Hei there Lev,

You see, my main man Chaslang got rid of my after all! :D

Well, this is actually a Toshiba laptop whose model name seems to be Satellite P20. Is this my MOBO?

After the P20 there should be another array of characters starting with S..look underneath the laptop...what is it..like s203?

No this is not you MOBO but will help (sorry about shortcut). However I could not find P20 listed at toshiba website. Any other numbers we may be able to use that may be listed on the comp label, Product number, serial number, anything?

    Ok, there we go...

    MODEL NAME: Satellite P20
    MOFRL NO. PSP26E-0J1X1-SP/SP20-771
    SERIAL NO. 94332202K
    P4 3.4GHz/2x512/80G42/17WT/DS/LMBW
    I94332202KSSP26E-01JX1SPD

I think that's pretty much my MOBO right? By the way, MOBO sounds like some character in The Lord Of the Rings...

    Yes! that's it guys! :):):)

NowI have the user manual. So what do I do?

BIOS updates might not help me now since I'm locked out of my pc, right?

The poster is getting to the bootloader screen. This isn't a BIOS password issue.

    Is this Windows NT?

    Actually, Im confused.

Can you elaborate what OS this is?

    Because:

    1. Windows NT doesn't have Safe Mode.
    2. Windows XP doesn't have vga mode.

    Windows 2000, maybe?

  16. Cauca

    Cauca Private E-2

Well, believe it or not it's windowsxp professional. 2002 version, with service pack2 installed.

I'm kind of lost on what I need to do now that I got the user's manual.

  17. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

User's manual won't help you here, as this is an OS problem.

For this to be Windows Xp, your bootloader is the incorrect version.

Do you have an actual XP installation CD?

    edit:

    If you don't...why not :)

    No, I don't.

    Ok....because, why?

    Is this OEM, or retail?

  20. Cauca

    Cauca Private E-2

it's retail, but the boot cd is just very far away in another part of the country!

    **I meant installation cd**

OK, I happen to not know what OEM means, I assumed my windowswas retail, since that's what I think it is, but now that I read the link you posted, seems like I need to know what OEM means. I'm now trying to find out.
