my roommate has some sort of malware that has completely taken over her hard drive. she's had malware problems for the past 3 years or so. we lived in the dorms at our school and unfortunately, the network was very insecure and most of the people living there at the time ended up getting some sort of malware on their computer (myself included, but my hard drive just burned out an needed to be replaced). the IT personnel at our school was never able to completely remove everything from her hard drive but she hasn't had any major problems since then. today, while she was browsing myspace, she got a popup window that said something like "quicktime needs to download an update". she x'ed out of that window and all hell broke loose. her desktop background changed and she keeps getting random popups in addition to spontaneous music that just starts playing at random times. i took a couple of screenshots and just told her to disable her internet connection for now because i don't know what else to do. i'm afraid she may just need to get a new harddrive and start from scratch since she's been having these problems for so long but i'm sure there has to be some other solution. here are the screenshots of her desktop and two of the popups that she keeps getting, just so you all can get a better idea of what's going on:

i followed all of the steps, but when i did the avg anti-spyware scan, it didn't create a report. i have "automatically generate report after every scan" selected but after the scan, when i clicked the reports tab, it says "no reports available".

Please use MSconfig to put your PC into Normal Startup mode as was requested in Step 1 of the READ ME. Use must remain in Normal Startup mode.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

We need to remove some bad services.

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to FireDaemon Service: msagent
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Now repeat the above to Stop and Disable the below two Services (if you do not find them or get any errors, just continue):
      • FireDaemon Service: netclient
      • FireDaemon Service: winsecure
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe which is really HijackThis, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/paste msagent into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now repeat the above to delete the below two Services (if you do not find them or get any errors, just continue):
      • netclient
      • winsecure
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.

Your log still shows you to be in selective start mode.

Based on your logs, you did not do all of the HijackThis fix I gave you. Please complete the HijackThis fix. Make sure when you use HijackThis (analyse.exe) that you EXIT all browsers before you click Fix checked. Otherwise it may not work.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created

We still have some more to do since something we were previously fixing did not get totally fixed yet.

What processor type do you have, what speed is it, and how much RAM do you have.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\Windows\system32\rxjddnvj.exe,

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files. If you still cannot get ComboFIx to run, using the below procedure, then reboot your PC first and then find the listed file and delete it yourself.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    Driver::
    rxjddnvj

    File::
    C:\Windows\system32\rxjddnvj.exe

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

it's a pentium 4 processor with 768 mb of ram. she's had it for 5 years or so, but the issues with windows taking so long to start up only began last week along with the spyware problem.

she also said that she ran spybot this morning and it came up with over 80 traces.

everything else seems to be working fine. here are the newest logs:

80 traces of what? Cookies??? Cookies are not problems?

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    9. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    10. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    11. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    12. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    13. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
