    Hi,

I am trying to decide on a firewall to put on my son's laptop. He bought avast pro but did not pay for the internet security suite. I an thinking either commodo or zonealarm free firewall. That or just pay the extra money and upgrade him to avast internet security. He has a dell inspiron with windows xp.

I just cleaned up his malware mess and now I am having trouble deciding which way to go with a firewall. I would appreciate any advice on what is the best freeware or cheap firewall. I'm not going to put alot of money into something he may disable or throw away. LOL at 24 the kid still never listens just brings the broken toy home for me fix.

I wonder why he chose Avast Pro. av-comparatives.org gave F-Secure the best ratings this last round. I think ESET/NODLabs, Kaspersky and BitDefender came in 2nd through 4th place.

I really like Zone Alarm. I think Sygate got the best rank here. Neither are compatible with my BitDefender Pro 2011 so I use the Windows 7 built-in firewall with Windows Firewall Control

Here is a great site to compare Firewalls: http://www.matousec.com/
They seem to like Outpost by 1st glance.

I don't like that page. They ranked Comodo Internet Security as the best and called it "FREE" When you click on the "Get it now" link, it's a referral link (to show Comodo the business came from their site) and it brings you to a the Comodo store. There you realize it's not free at all. Like any product you can try it free for a short time but you must purchase it if you want it for more than a month. These are deceptive and sleazy tactics. I don't trust them anymore.

This is the link he provided: http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge/results.php

The reviewed Comodo Internet Security 5.3.176757.1236, rated it number one and provided this as it's download link: http://www.matousec.com/matousec/redirect.php?product=7

Pretty sleazy if you ask me.

Very good info. I've used Zonelabs free firewall for years. Thinking I might try Comodo.

Hi Texan. I always download from MajorGeeks link, if a program I want is available there. Check out Comodo Internet Security 5.3.50343.1237 at http://majorgeeks.com/Comodo_Internet_Security_d6234.html

    Author: Comodo

    Size: 33.5 MB
    License: Freeware
    Requires: Win7/Vista/XP
    Downloaded: 32188 Times

The reason for its size is that it combines 3 programs in one, and you make your choice when you install it. @sikvik :)

    Comodo Personal Firewall
    Comodo Anti Virus
    and Comodo Internet Security

If you only want the Firewall, or the AV, or all 3, you can choose at the time.
I've never downloaded from the Comodo site so can't comment.

I think I'll stick with comodo. I wish he hadn't bought avast I'd just go straight comodo. LOL I still might.

Thanks for the links. Since I didn't get those "it doesn't work with . . ." messages I'll assume the software plays nice together.

    Bye everyone
