I am "attempting" to salvage a laptop (Toshiba Satellite P15-S479) and I need to purchase a hard drive.

I believe I need to know whether it takes an "SATA" or an "IDE" type please?

I really don't know much at all about this stuff - but I seem to be able to swap-out parts well-enough.

Thanks in advance (any links, advice, etc. to a good place to buy from would be greatly appreciated!).

    Okay this looks quite promising:

    http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Toshiba,Satellite,P15,PSP10U-0DXPGR,Laptop,Parts.aspx for spare parts

    http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/ModelsSerialImg.htm#Toshiba for specific Model Number

    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-P10/remove-hard-drive.htm Guide for changing HDD

    Bingo I got it:
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...r=P15-S479&selCategory=3&selFamily=1073768663

Goto Detailed Specs tab and about 1/2 down first column you will see the Mass Storage Device is a Enhanced IDE (ATA-5) interface 5400 RPM

That should have all of the info you need.
