Need good, free .divx to .avi converter / 3rd party movie maker

I am making a movie for a class project, but all my files are in .divx format. Windows movie maker won't take them, so I need a way to either:

a. Convert the files to .avi

b. Find a good, 3rd party movie maker that accepts .divx

I would perfer it if the solution to my problem didn't involve money.

Make a copy of the movie file and change the extension from .divx to .avi.

 

It works pretty well except that you can only use the first five minutes of any clip. My clips are much longer than that, but it does give me an idea.

If I can find a program that can cut .divx files into sections I'll pretty much be set.

Also, changing the file extension didn't work for some reason. Even though it did produce a usable file, windows movie maker wouldn't accept it.
