I have finally had it with Nortons software!! I have pretty much been able to determine good software from the different posts on MG to replace my Norton AV and Firewall software. But I have always used their Utilities to keep my registry cleaned up (they probably didn't do that very well either -- but it is all I had).

Does anyone have any suggestions for some good Registry Software?

I use Registry Mechanic and CoffeeCup Tune-up Pro -
Both are for purchase and not free, though they both have trials listed on Geeks. They work together and I run them every couple days. CoffeeCup has a scheduler that works well. I also like Ad-aware SE plus with plugins. It also has registry cleaners in it, and I sometimes ctach things there as well, but it's a rare thing that the other 2 miss something. Registry Mech has an updater in it as well as Ad-Aware. I realise these are common, but when used aggressively and with updates, they work well.

    My registry cleaners are:

    1. RegSeeker (free)
    2. Registry Mechanic (pay)

Each of these picks up what the other doesnt get.

Thanks for the input everyone... I decided to go with RegSupreme Pro. Now I need more advice.

After the install, I performed a Registry Cleaner (Normal Mode) and it came up with over 300 problems (I guess this proves the Norton Utilities were not doing that good of a job)!!

But now, at boot-up I get the following message "The Path '-go -c28 -w' does not exist or is not a directory."

How do I eliminate this problem?

When you fixed all the problems did you create a backup?

Keep WinDoctor and Speeddisk utilities. They work well on my PC.
Run another AV program and another Registry Cleaner/s. Baz

I did make a backup ControlMind. I also found the problem, in my start-up programs (msconfig/Startup), I found an entry - startup item (explorer) command (C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\explorer.exe -go -c28 -w) location (SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run).

Since I know many startup items are not actually needed during startup, I disabled this entry... the problem does not reoccur.

I wouldnt use msconfig as a startup management program. You should use Startup Inspector for Windows 2.2 which is a freeware program to manage startup entries. I currently use it, and had no problems with it :)

Control, StartUp Inspector sounds like it could be a nice piece of sofware. I downloaded and installed it but when I try to start it, I get the following message --- 'This application has failed to start because borlndmm.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem'.

I reinstalled it but got the same error message -- any ideas on what I can do to get around this problem?

    Thanks Star17, got the.dll loaded.

Control, Startup Inspector is good, provides a lot of info previously unknown but It had a couple of problems.

One Quicken .exe gave it problems (wasn't really needed in the Startup list anyway - so I took it out - which resolved the Inspector problem.

And it found a couple of items that needed to be removed (one being that 'explorer' item mentioned below) -- but when I clicked those boxes to remove them and then clicked on APPLY it gave me a message that applied to an entry above one of the items clicked (I know, not very clear but I can't remember the message) -- then I checked in MSCONFIG/Startup and the items I wanted Startup Inspector to remove were still there.

I wouldnt rely on msconfig. The items you checked off and applied did they startup?

The items I checked off using Startup Inspector and clicking APPLY were still in the MSCONFIG/Startup list when I looked there -- they didn't startup because they were entries pointing to void items (going to locations that did not exist -- those type of items appear to be indicated in Startup Inspector with a red underline.

To disable those entries, I had to use the MSCONFIG/Startup screen.
