Need suggestions for a Data Center

I work in a data center and they are a little behind the times as far as record keeping goes. They don't have a living document that lists all hardware, ports available, port connections, etc for each and every cabinet. We have something half-a$$ed in Access that gets updated every once in a while - and as you know, documentation for something like this needs to receive 100% effort & accuracy or else the whole thing is worthless.

We're trying to initiate this now and audit the whole place. That way, we have a document that we have confidence in knowing what connects to what, without having to constantly go physically trace the connection because we're not sure with our current documentation.

Anyway, is there program someone can recommend that keeps this kind of detail? The biggest thing is that it needs to be searchable. We're thinking about Visios and doing a CTRL-F to search for server names, etc. The company uses Vantive, but the problem I have with relational databases is they usually aren't clean (require fields that don't apply, etc.). and are a mess to read or comprehend. Any responses are greatly appreciated.
