So, I rented a movie tonight and tried to play it on my computer. Vista Home Premium, was trying to play it in Media Center.

When I go to Media Center and press play DVD, it informs me that the DVD has enhanced content and asks if I'd like to play the DVD or the Enhanced Content. I figured I'd see what the enhanced content was before I started the movie, I usually enjoy extras and such. When I clicked that, a UAC box came up concerning the active x control. I didn't want to get into all of that, so I figured I'd just click no/cancel, go back, and start the DVD. When I tried, the DVD did not play. It just goes to a black screen and the DVD drive reads constantly, but never does anything. Media Center locks up.

I thought, maybe it's messing up because I blocked the active x control... Shuoldn't need it to play the DVD, I wouldn't think, but I figured I'd see if it worked with it or whatever. So, I clicked enhanced content again and let it install. Then it displays this page about agreeing to terms of service or whatever... obviously not what i wanted, so I hit back(again) and tried to play the DVD again. Still no go... Now I'm curious about the active x control I let it install, and begin doing general and malware searches on it. Can't really find anything... Though I did find a HJT log and the helper(chasling maybe? something similar) instructed the user to have HJT fix it. This doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad, but raises the question.

So, if anyone has any ideas as to why this movie might not be playing, please let me know.

If anyone has any information on this active x control, please let me know.

If anyone has any idea why I can't delete the active x control via the Manage Add-ons window in IE, even when it is disabled, please let me know.

The active x control is as follows... (info taken from WinPatrol)
    Module: IEPlayInterface Class
    Command: iaieplay.dll
    Company: InterActual Technologies
    CLSID: {2042B57E-6336-459E-B7CE-2A0F6C9E6AF8}
    Version: 1.17.11.0620
    File & location: C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\IAIEPLAY.DLL

Thanks... I hate it when I don't know anything about something on my computer, especially in a situation where something isn't working that I want to do. <_<

The DVD is Shoot 'em Up, btw. Thanks for any info...

Tried a couple of different codec packages, including that one, did not work.

I will just watch the DVD on a regular DVD player, I don't really feel like tracking down and installing codecs just for this one DVD. Thanks for the help, though, it was worth a shot.

Any information on this active x control, though?

I mean, I don't think that anything bad would come on a DVD, but, I'm kind of OCD about my computer and would like to make sure. Considering I'll never need to use it, I may just get rid of it anyway, just so that I don't have things I don't use. I suppose I could use HJT to delete it.

I have seen InterActual player come up many, many times when a commercial DVD is played on a PC. However, I have never had it do anything like what you're describing. My experience with InterActual is that it is basically a media player for the DVD and some of the enhanced content on the disc. It's been a long time (like a few years) since I've actually installed InterActual and I've always been able to access the extra features without using it. I very rarely (if ever) watch commercial DVDs on my personal PC and it's been awhile since I've put a recent release into any PCs, so it could be that InterActual has changed what it used to be. If you never plan on using it just remove it. But before letting HJT delete it, see if it's listed in Add/Remove Programs and/or the Start > Programs list with an uninstall function. If so, use that instead of HJT, and only use HJT afterward to be sure it's totally gone.

I would think it would be safe - but I can not be certain

    Go to the InterActual site
    http://www.interactual.com/
    and you eventually see this
Someone told me to stay away from that player so when it comes up, I always close it and then open my player either InterVideo or VLC.

Everyone is telling me good things about VLC, I'll probably see if it will play it. I've already downloaded it, I just haven't installed it yet. I was having quite a bit of computer trouble that night... Not necessarily related to this, just other things.

I could not delete the active x using IE's Manage Add-ons screen, and it was not in add/remove programs, the programs list, and did not show under Revo Uninstaller, so I deleted it using HJT.

VLC Media Player locked up as well when trying to play the DVD. So far that makes 3 media players.. VLC, WMP, and WMC. Oh well.

If you're having troubles playing DVDs, you may also have trouble with other types of multimedia files, so this could be an indication of a deeper problem. Can you watch online video (YouTube, for example)? What about regular audio CDs? MP3s? You should check the Event Viewer and see if something is listed for the time when VLC (and the other media players) locked up on the DVD, and post the info if anything is listed. It's been my experience that when one thing gets whacked with media stuff, it gradually (or not-so-gradually) moves down the line and slowly (or not-so-slowly) starts to really mess up other media related operations. I don't want to tell you to just install a codec pack, but it could be all you need. The Vista Codec Pack is a popular and highly rated Vista compatible codec pack. You might want to run a codec ID tool first just to see if you have any broken/corrupt codecs. I've used both the Codec Installer and the KLite Codec Tweak Tool to check for possible codec issues....

    Do you have NERO installed???
I think it is a possability that your DVD itself (The disk) may be unreadable.
Nero has a VERY handy 'disc info' tool that will tell you if the DVD is readable.

Have you tried playing it in MEDIA PLAYER (WINDOWS)???
Usually, if you need codecs, Media Player will tell you when attempting to play the file.

I will re-recommend you install a codec pack for Vista...

I tried Windows Media Center, Windows Media Player and VLC. All of the hung when trying to play the DVD. IE, Windows Media Player could not attempt to find the missing codec, because it locked up.

An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom0 during a paging operation.

There's about a billion(exaggeration) of those in event viewer. I can provide more detail about the error if needed.

It also, of course, lists the app hangs.

I've never had any trouble to speak of with any media other than this particular dvd.

I downloaded and installed other codec packs but they did not fix the issue and I uninstalled them.

I HAVE, however, had trouble with this DVD drive before. I don't know why it would cause problems with one particular DVD, though, and not any others. The other trouble I've had was not exactly with reading things, but with with burning. However, I did notice, that with one particular disk, my Crysis disk, it will make a sort of knocking noise until I being to 'use' the disk. Like if I browse the contents or start the game, the noise stops. It's just when I first put it in that it knocks. Strange, I think. Maybe I just got a defective drive, but I think it's a little too late to RMA or get a warranty claim.
