Need XP Home disc (original damaged)

Here is a delemna my son has.

His original XP Home sp2 was damaged or is unreadable. He said Microsoft wants like $60 to send an e-mail to tech. support to request a replacement disc. He still has the key but no readable disc. This past summer he bought the Vista upgrade and just recently decided to reformat his computer. Now he can't get the original XP Home to load.

Any suggestions to work the system?

Contact Microsoft, but this time, talk to customer service and say the disk is completely ruined. Replacements dont normally come from tech support, unless for some odd reason, customer service has been led to believe its a technical issue instead.
