    Hello,

I am trying to help my daughter with some computer issues (this thread is under her log-in). She has an acer aspire m laptop, running win8, approx 15 months old. I am above a newbie, but far from an expert dealing with malware etc, and I am not very familiar with win8 overall.

Several weeks ago she noticed her browser page and search engine had changed to Tuvaro, and a number of ads began appearing. In the past few days the machine has begun crashing and/or restarting intermittently, and starting today a message of "bad_config..." has appeared. There are also several sites that I believe have higher security requirements (chase bank, NY Unemployment) that she can no longer log on, despite entering the correct log-in info.

I cleared the cache, tried to uninstall the rogue browser and programs via browser tools and revo uninstaller, ran ccleaner, malwarebytes and superantispyware trying to eliminate the apparent malware issues. As that was unsuccessful, I came to your site to seek assistance. The machine seems to load faster, but tuvaro is still there in the browsers. We did not have any errors on start-up, but that had been an intermittent problem.

I have worked through the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST thread, (hopefully correctly), including re-running ccleaner and malwarebytes in order to execute everything in the prescribed order.

I am attaching the logs as instructed. We would appreciate any assistance you may be able to provide.

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

    Laurie

    Hi and welcome! :)

Are you deliberately set up to use a proxy?

I am not set up for Proxy which has been checked on google chrome. I used to be set up on verizon Fios and sometimes the proxy setting would set without my notice and I would go in and unconnect the proxy, but I have not been connected to proxy for a long time. Please let me know what I can do from here?

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large [IMG] button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into a text file to ATTACH into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Give Ccleaner a run. Not the reg scanner just the cleaner itself to be rid of a chunk of temp files/folders.

[IMG] Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.

    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
    • Click on the Scan button.
    • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
    • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
    • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
    • Attach the logfile to your next next reply.
    • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

    • Re run RogueKiller (just a scan) and attach log.
    • Same for Hitman Pro please.
    • Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
    • Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Thanks again for the help. Still working through the instructions, but wanted to touch base in case missing some items may change anything.

I will keep you updated on the progress.

I have tried to post a response twice before, and I do not see either one. Don't know what is going on!! Trying a simple reply (instead of quote) this time.

    REVO:

    These items:
    SavingsBull
    ScorpionSaver Services
    ScorpionSaver
    Search Manager Service
    Search module
    SuperFast PC

did not have icons on revo, except ScorpionSaver. That one generated a message along the lines of "this process is for installed products only", though it did remove one entry anyway.

    RK:

Did not generate report [2], but did create several [0] files this evening. Attached those reports.

    MGTools:

    Couldn't find these:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://search.coupons.com/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://search.coupons.com/
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BackgroundContainer] "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Rundll32.exe" "C:\Users\kids4_000\AppData\Local\Conduit\BackgroundContainer\BackgroundContainer.dll",DllRun
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [LVMaintenance] C:\Users\kids4_000\AppData\Roaming\LVMaintenance\LVMaintenance.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [LVMaintenance] C:\Users\kids4_000\AppData\Roaming\LVMaintenance\LVMaintenance.exe (User 'Default user')
O23 - Service: Extension Security Monitor Service (scbhmon) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files (x86)\Surf Canyon\scbhmon.exe (file missing)
    O23 - Service: Search Module Update (SMUpd) - Search Module Ltd. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Goobzo\GBUpdate\smu.exe

Did a log before removing items I did find (attached). HJT also could not locate files for several lines, and then experienced several errors. Took screen captures of error msgs if needed.

I am still following your list, and will update on progress.

This time, I saw the quick message as to why my post doesn't show yet, so please delete the duplicates (incl the one where I missed the attachments!).

    More logs attached.

AdwCleaner generated such a short list, I thouht I made a mistake, so I ran it again, thus 2 attachments.

Tuvaro appears to be gone. I have not yet rebooted a last time as my daughter is asleep and I don't have a password to sign back in to her machine or this thread, and I wanted to complete your requests.

Thank you for all your hard work. Will log in again tomorrow and give another update.

This is still showing in RogueKiller. Check through all the tabs available to try and locate it. Let me know how you get on.

Did you have Adw cleaner remove what it found?
