I want to set up a connection so that I can access my CPU for my old computer (WIN XP) and transfer files to my NEW CPU (Vista).

I think I need to set up like a local network and enable sharing or something.

But... I have ZERO idea of how to go about it.

Anyone have a tutorial or instructions or tips?

    Thank you VERY much!

    Hi

Is this going to be a wired or wifi network, what router do you have?

    Some info for you
    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/networking.mspx
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

So basically follow the Setup Network and settinsg for File and Print Sharing and make sure both of the workgroup names are the same like MSHome, Workgroup or MyNetwork etc disable your installed firewall when setting up the network.

Will need this installed on the XP PC LLTD Responder

    Hi

Should have no major issues with the options me and lmbest posted, two options and both work great once workgroups are set with same name and leave as WorkGroup as its the defaul one so easy to use, just in networking set Network Discovery, Print and File Sharing to on and create a folder for network sharing and then right click and choose Properties and in Sharing tab set the Share to Owner Sharing.

Just remember to instal LLTD as XP wont pick up the XP PC.

I have lately used Windows Easy Transfer (WET) via external HDD and works well for moving setting and files, none of these methods either network or WET will transfer applications, those will ahve to be re-installed again to create new registry entries in new OS.
