I have just recently been trying to speed up my downloads by port forwarding. To learn this technique, I went onto a straight-forward.com site. This site taught me how to create my own static ip... so far so good... however, after such process was complete, the site wanted me to type in my IP address and subnet mask. My question is this: Can this site now use my ip information against me? (Tracking where I go and my keystrokes?) Any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Dalazor.

I am no expert but what i know is....

Websites already can find your IP address, majorgeeks has it.

They can find out where you live from it, eg: my IP address says i live in leeds witch is the city i live in, they can find out what browser you use, what ISP, and some other things.

But as far as i know they wont find any new information as they should already have your IP.

I shouldn't worry too much it looks a legitimate site. http://www.companylinker.com/0000000468.html

You need more than an IP address to do any real damage to a network.

No site in the world can speed up your download beyond the quality of own specific connection, at best it is a way to push ads on you, at worse it might be dangerous.

You can try to optimize your computer to do the best, http://www.ezlan.net/Internet_Speed.html

Hey guys, thanks for the advice. However, if someone could check, the site that I went to was not straight-forward.com... it was (portforwarding.com), I just used straight-forward because I thought I am not allowed to use specific domain addresses. However, as it turns out, straight-forward.com does exist. Anyway, what do you think of portforwarding.com? does it seem legit?

portforwarding is needed to make sure that some applications can access, and be accessed corretly when using Internet connetion.

It has nothing to do with "Speeding".

  7. You are allowed to use domain addresses as long as it's a safe site. Read Major Attitudes Thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=92796
