Ok, I installed a new Motherboard in my friends computer. But now, when we turn it on, it gets to the loading windows screen, then reboots. I also installed a new DVD Burner also. This is of course Windows XP Home. We tried booting into safe mode and it only got so far and rebooted. Any ideas on what the problem may be? And if you need any other information, just let me know. Thanks!

Sounds to me like a driver issue. Is the old MB still working?

Ok, I probably should have gone into a little more detail. The reason we are replacing the MB is because the old one suppoably made his computer shut down or restart randomly. Now I suggested he troubleshoot other things before replacing his MB, but he ended up taking it to a computer place and they told him he need to replace the MB. So he did.

That brings us to last night. I installed it and got everything hooked up. The computer would turn on but not go past the windows xp loading screen. In fact, it would get to the loading screen and then immediately restart. So he formatted the hard drive and tried to reinstall winxp. The format went fine, but when it said that setup was copying files (files need for the installation of windows I'm assuming) it would get to 100% and freeze.

Have you tried the installation several times? When he formatted, was it a quick format or a full? Sometimes a format doesn't fully take and I will use the partition manager to erase the old partition and put in a new one, then full format. This always works for me. Also check the disk for scratches.

I did not try a full format, but used the quick instead. I also didn't delete and repartition either. I will give them both a try. Thanks!

Ok, I did what you suggested. It froze right after it got done formatting and it says 'Creating a list of files to be copied'. It just freezes randomly it seems.

Ok, we just ran into another blue screen. It says,

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent any damage.

    NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS

The thing is, we didn't even get to the point of installing windows. So I'm pretty lost as to why it keeps doing this.

could be the CPU is bad. I would suggest running an HDD diagnosis too (use a boot CD). Is the MOBO exactly the same model?

No, the MB is a different brand. It supports the CPU and memory he had. Any suggestions on a good HDD diagnostic tool?

Try a full format and repartition.

I did try that, and what happened was it formatted completely, then when it says 'Creating list of files to be copied' it froze.

yes sorry i didnt read properly.

ok for HDD diagnostics you'll need a boot CD. sadly I cant link the only one I know of because it contains illegal copywrited material.

    Could also be bad memory.
I have had bad memory cause similar problems when trying to load a OS.
You got any other memory you could try?

Yea I could always take the memory out of my computer and put it in his. We have the same kind of memory.

Ok, he tried taking all his memory out except one stick. That didn't work. I still have yet to try putting my memory in. But I would really like to test the hard drive. Does anyone know of a good program I can use to test it during boot up?
