new to routers and opening ports/other configurations

Hi:

Since my dad got a router for his laptop, I've had problems playing online games, specifcally Warcraft III. We've never had a router before, and I have no idea how to set it up so it doesn't give me problems(it randomly disconnects me from Battle.net). We have a NetGear WGR614 v6 router. How can I configure ports so it doesn't keep disconnecting me from online-based games? Thanks!

I opened all the ports they said to, and I'm still having problems. Is there a temporary solution I can use until I can get it fixed, like configuring my cable normally until the laptop needs to be used?
