    Hi guys

Firstly, apologoies if this is in the wrong section, and i hope someone would kindly move this into the correct area.

Secondly, id like to make it clear that my computer knowledge is virtually zero (although i bet you guessed that already, huh?)

anywho, from the top (i'll try n keep it short).

Yesterday i got that annoying and seemingly popular blue desktop background with ye old "spyware..." message thing. After searching the web looking for answers, i came across the following: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-2277172.php

It seemed the most simple method that i could get my head around, so i followed this procedure and hey, problem solved!

So, with my new AVG thing, i did a scan just to check and got a shed load of "tracking cookies" come up. put em in the vault and deleted them. Not only on other scans have these appeared, but when i go onto google, most links direct me either some site saying i have a virus, or porn. How kind.

Basically, i cant get onto some sites that i usually find using google. clickin the links to site lead me to porn, so i have to type in the address. A couple of attempts to get onto wikipedia via google did the same.

I dont really no why it is like this, and it only seems to effect google - all other things on my comp work perfectly fine as far as i can tell.

I have windows vista if thats important (most people seem to have XP or earlier - granted the link to the post i found is from 2005 i believe).

Thanks, and sorry for the long post! hope someone could assist me.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Those old procedures do not properly remove the current forms of SmitFraud which have become more insideous and difficult to remove. Our procedures below will! And anything that remains afterwards will be removed after we see your logs.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Ok, i followed all the instructions.

A few things to note - after i ran the SAS thing, my desktop went back to blue, but without the message in the middle as previous. And i started gettin pop-ups which had the AVG logo in the corner sayin i have tronjan horses and stuff.

This stopped after i ran the next antivirus (spybot i think?)

I also havent typed anything into google to check if it works. Here's the logs - hope ive done this right!

    and thanks very much!

Since you are now using AVG8, you need to get all of Norton 360 removed. It is still hanging around. Run the below tool and then reboot your PC. Then after reboot, run it one more time.

    Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

Now run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hp\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [4oD] "C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KHost.exe" -all
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [kdx] C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KHost.exe -all
    O23 - Service: Symantec Lic NetConnect service (CLTNetCnService) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing)
    O23 - Service: KService - Kontiki Inc. - C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KService.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I got the success message, as far as im aware everything ran smoothly and my comp is working fine.

this wasnt on the list though: "O23 - Service: Symantec Lic NetConnect service (CLTNetCnService) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing)"

so i carried on without selecting that.

    Here's the logs.

Hope all is good, thanks again. awesome service you provide here!

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. You can uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now.
    2. We recommed you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a scanner. It uses no resources except a little disk space until you run a scan.
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combo-fix folder from combofix.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
