i just built myself a new computer, it runs awesome but iv had it for a week now and its starting to become slow.. i have a WAY better computer then my friends and they have better ping/latency on games.. and we all have the same internet provider.. would anyone know what the problem is? the only thing i would think is that.... um does anyone have an amd 64? well thats what i have and you know the part where you have the "lock" the heatsink/fan on? you turn that lever and it locks in place better? well.. i didnt do that part b/c i thought if i twisted it any farther it would of broke b/c i was turning it pretty hard so i just didnt do that part; it seems very secere already but i dont know.. another thing.. my harddrive.. i have a ATA hdd and its fine but.. you guys know when you plug in a external hdd or a mp3 player to your computer? theres a icon at the bottom.. a green arrow? so you can safely remove the device? well i have that icon there ALL the time and i checked to see what it was and it was my hard drive.. im sure thats not suppose to be there.. can anyone help me please? thanks!

"well i have that icon there ALL the time"

If you have a SATA drive that's what that is. I would just ignore it.

You might want to post the temps of your CPU. You can use Everest.

so basically what your saying is, your heat sink isnt attached to your cpu, causing it to over heat, and slowing it down. you answerd your own questions.

"A64 3700+ 1mb L2 SDiego" ... i see that you have a amd 64 also... well you kno when you have to lock the heatsink on? you twist that lever? well i put the heatsink on.. i just didnt lock it b/c i thought it was going to break if i did it any harder

you HAVE to lock it in place, if its not locking in your putting something in wrong, which in this case is probably the heatsink orientation.

are you serious? i HAVE to have that locked in? well iv tryed tons of time and i cant seen to get the lever turned around the whole way

X_40's_X, if you're talking about the system that attaches the heatsink/fan to the processor socket -- yes, that has to be properly fastened. It does take a firm pressure to do that.

It's designed to put some pressure on the heatsink to force it into firm contact with the CPU die. Without that pressure, you won't get proper heat transfer from the CPU die to the heatsink. Your CPU chip then runs hot, and will slow down (or stop) to protect itself if necessary.

The interface between the CPU die and the bottom of the heatsink is critical for proper heat transfer. You must have a good thermal paste or pad between the CPU die, but that material must be as thin as possible without getting air in there -- even in microscopic quantities.

Omegamerc is right -- if you have to force it, something is wrong.

~Pyrate~ suggested that you post your CPU temps. How about it?

if you have Everest, the run the software and then click Computer > Sensor and then up will come any temps you have for items like, CPU, Motherboard, Case, HDs, Graphic Card etc ( note you may not have all temps I have listed as those items must have a temp sensor chip )

    Temperatures
    Motherboard 40 °C (104 °F)
    CPU 39 °C (102 °F)
    GPU 42 °C (108 °F)
    GPU Ambient 35 °C (95 °F)
    WDC WD800JD-00JRC0 41 °C (106 °F)

    there are my temps

Your temperature is fine and well within range, however, is that when the machine has been under load, or when it's been idle?

Place the machine under load or get it to run slow, then immediately check the temps.

    Motherboard 39 °C (102 °F)
    CPU 40 °C (104 °F)
    GPU 41 °C (106 °F)
    GPU Ambient 35 °C (95 °F)

It's definitely not overheating if those temperatures are accurate.

It's well within normal range, and it's actually quiet good, so I suggest you look elsewhere.
