Hi, I recently was under attack from a virus and tons of spyware. With some help I was able to get my Laptop up to par. But now my audio isn't working. When I go to the main volume control it say there is no audio device. I have troubleshooted, tried to make different sounds work and have tried CDS. No luck getting any sound. I would appreciate any help or advice you all may have. I am running Windows XP on my Acer 5100 Laptop. LMK what other info you need. I can't find the CD that came with my laptop for the life of me.

    TIA ~ Tonya

    Hi Tonya, welcome to MG.
We'll try a couple of things to get your sound back. First, goto Start>Control Panel>System, then click on the Hardware tab, and then on the Device Manager button. Last click on the plus sign in front of Sound, Video, and Game Controllers. Are there any question marks or exclamation points? If there is right click on the device with them and then click un-install. Do that on all that have the ? or !. (While there take note of what your sound device is so that you can post it back here if this doesn't work) Then shut your PC down (not re-start) then start it back up. Did that cure it?

That didn't work, but I am a little confused about which audio device I should repost. There seems to be a few. Is there something in particular that I should be looking for?

Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading and running, look under Multimedia, or, under Multimedia, PCI / PnP Audio. This will tell you what sound devices you have available on your system.

    Post that information.

First, I'll need your Model #. It should be like Acer 5100 - something.
You can find that by going to Start>All Programs>AccessorIes>System Tools>System Information. It will be listed under System Summary.
Then click on the plus sign in front of Components and then Sound Device. There should be only one listed there.
Send me that info and we should be able to get the right driver and get it installed.

Edit: Dan posted will I was busy. You can get the same info that way, too. But we will definitely need it to get your driver. If you decide to download Everest (good program) include your motherboard model, too.

    Close but no cigar. ;)
We need your PC Make, Model # and audio device. Follow the steps above to get that info or download Everest from the link Dan Penny provided.
Then post that info in YOUR own thread in this forum (Drivers). That helps keep the confusion down

This is where you can find the audio driver, input Notebook, Aspire 5100 and your driver is the Realtek Audio Driver v5.10.0.5257. If it is an executable file (.exe) just double-click on it and it should install. If it is a zip file, unzip it and double click on the setup.exe file.

If that doesn't get your sound back, you may have to install this one from from Realtek: this is the one you want.
    Install the same way.

They are probably tthe same drivers.
