No Beep on startup

    Hi everybody,
i found this 933MHz P3 at school and I wanted to put it into a computer for my mom. The thing is that the processor is a socket 370 and it's a slot 1 motherboard. I also happened to have a slocket, which is perfect.

So I put it in, and turn it on and there's no beep. Is that an indication that no CPU is detected so my slocket is broken? I tried my other slot1 P3 and it worked so it's not the slot. I'm using an Award BIOS by the way.

    Thanks for the help

It's really hard to say at this point what the problem is. However, I think that the slot 1 motherboard doesn't support the CPU. Many slot 1 mobos will not support a chip that fast mainly because no slot 1 CPUs faster than 1133mhz were made (and very few of those), and by the time anything over 750mhz came out, the slot 1 form factor was on it's way out. The best way to know for sure would be to look up the mobo's specs and see what the max CPU is for that board. Did you clear the BIOS first? Also, many of those older boards have jumpers for FSB and multipliers and if these jumpers aren't set up just right, you get nothing. When you power up do you get any power LEDs? Do the drives and/or fans spin up? We really need much more info from you before any kind of remotely accurate diagnosis can be formed. Try to track down a mobo manual. Many of your answers will be found there. ;)

OK i'll check up on the specs. I actually forgot to clear the bios, but after i put the cpu in i can't even get to the bios at all, so i guess i'll have to do it before. There aren't any jumpers for multipliers or fsb on my board, and the leds that I get are a flashing power LED and a steady HDD LED. The fans all spin up but the drives don't.

The BIOS is an OEM Award BIOS. It's just a computer that I took from my school's junk pile along with this 933mhz coppermine. I'd be thrilled if it worked. If not I'll just get a cheap motherboard from my friend.

Also, I just tested a 400mhz celeron in the slocket, so I think it might just be the slocket that's broken and not the other stuff.

I'll try clearing the BIOS tomorrow and I'll get back to you when I'm done. Thanks:D

You can reset the BIOS to factory defaults by using a jumper on the motherboard. It's usually right near the motherboard battery and may have a red or blue jumper on it. It may be labeled CLR_CMOS or JRTC or CL_RTC. You can also remove the battery for a fw minutes to clear the BIOS to default. Is there a model number printed on the board anywhere? If you could post the number, I could help find more info for you.

the mother board is a columbia iii
    it's from seanix

    i'm eeeediot's brother

and i'm pretty sure it's the processor either it;s broken or it's incompatible cause when i put in the celeron it works now
    dunno what happened
maybe my brother wasn't pushing it in enough but dunno
and maybe it was the crazy attempt to remove the heatsink from the thing we kinda screwed it up and wacked it a few times
but the first time i stuck it in it showed up as a 600 mhz celeron even though it's only a 400 mhz celeron then it didn't work
it the froze and i couldn't do anything so i turned it off it didn't work again until i took it ou and put it back again then it showed up as a 400 again so maybe it's the the cpu that's broken dunno hopefully it's just incompatible so my brother could maybe go find another motherboard

well there is this mother board but it has no power button contacts
so how would we turn it on it has no plces to stick in the power button and stuff so yeah...
could try to find a friend or something

Do you think it might be the RAM?

The FSB of this CPU is 133MHz, but I only have PC-100 RAM.
I read something somewhere before that I don't remember.

I got a new motherboard and everything works. The motherboard automatically clocked my ram up to 133MHz and the computer wouldn't work, so I clocked it back down manually to 100MHz. There's now a difference between the clock speed of the CPU and RAM, but everything else works fine.

Is there anything bad about running different speed RAM from CPU clock? Will there be any slowdowns?
