    The story this far is that a downloaded music torrent file turned out to be a bunch of spyware. It left the desktop icons flashing, changed the clock to say virus alert, added porn and antispyware shortcuts on the desktop. I ran spybot which found some trojans, spyware etc, removed them and rebooted the computer. At this stage I had no icons or task manager only desktop wallpaper. I can't use control alt del or anything else. Nothing comes up only a blank desktop.
    I went into safe mode (which is all i can really run in now) and went through the steps about removing malware. I have gone through all of the steps (to the best of my knowledge), except super antispyware which won't install in safe mode. I have ran adaware se, avg, spyware doctor, and spybot.
    At this point I have no idea what to do. There doesn't seem to be any infections but I can't run in normal mode so something is obviously wrong. I did try a system restore to a month ago when everything was fine (from safe mode) and when I booted to normal mode .. same problem.

    I will attach my logs and hope for the best.
    Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered
    Ryan

    Thanks for the response.

    My operating system is in Japanese. That is what it looks like in a program that isn' t language compatible. I am not sure what it is but it has always been there.
    I will have to find it on my system and get my wife to translate.

    I didn't recognize any malware...and the fact that you did a system restore and have the same problem would indicate something in you registry.

    I would suggest that you post in the software forum ....you may need to do a repair install.

    Tim,

    Thanks for the help. I actually started in that forum and they directed me here. Is it possible for a mod to move this thread there or should I just start a new one?

    Thanks again

    Just for the halibut...let's do this:

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    o If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\ƒfƒXƒNƒgƒbƒv
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\ƒXƒ^[ƒg ƒƒjƒ…[

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Your state that the problem occurred after running Spybot and removing some items. Perhaps you should run the recovery file in Spybot and set everything back ....then if you get your desktop back, run the other scans.

    I restored all of the windows security issues that spybot took off as well as explorer and task manager which I thought was going to be a definite fix. But...still the same problem. Should I restore all of the crap as well, virtumonde, etc?

    Thanks
    Ryan

    I'm at a loss as to what is happening...at this point I would do possibly two things:

    Go to start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without quotes.....and have your xp cd handy.

    Run it twice.

    If that doesn't help...you may have to do a repair install.

    Tim,
    Sorry for the delayed response, I was away. I finally broke down and reinstalled windows....it sucks, but, it was the final solution.

    I wanted to let you know that your generosity (and the community) never ceases to amaze me. The fact that you guys, and girls, devote so much free time to helping the rest of us out.....is amazing.

    Thanks, it won't be forgotten.
