No Sound: Driver missing for MultiMedia Audio Controller

Hello, newbie here. I am having a problem getting sound to work after a Windows XP reinstall. Ive tried a few things that just don't seem to work. My Device Manager posts that a driver is not working for a Multimedia Audio Controller. Any help would be appreciated. I have also posted a report from Everest to help with any assistance. Thanks

First step: download and install the AC97 driver, see if your symptoms change.

Downloaded AC 97 driver and nothing. Not sure if I need to download it to a specific location, but was not successful.

Did the driver install at all, and were there any messages or flags during the install?

Also, do I read that this is Windows XP with no Service Pack?

 

Actually, I dont think it did. I do have Service Pack 3 installed. This is a second OS on a (HP) hard drive installed in a Gateway PC. So not sure if that is the reasoning for my problems, but everything is working except sound.
The AC 97 driver basically unzips, but im not sure if there is a specific location that I can install it in.
