I didn't know if this should go under the spyware forum or software forum, so with it being related to security, I figured I would start here.

I have Norton 2004 AV and Firewall. For some reason something keeps turning off my Auto Protect. Not when start up the computer, but just simply whenever, when i'm on the computer, jusout of nowhere. I have done all the Spyware checks etc. and my AV updates are current and It is set to scan once a week and it never finds any virusses etc. The only thing I do is Play on Pokerstars (ALOT) and occasionally I search on google, but I never go to any questionable sites like Porn etc. If I download anything it is from a reputable source like here or PC World.com or Yahoo or places that I know darn good and well that it has a good reputation. As far as my e-mails go...I stick with only the people I know and my SBC YAHOO internet account scans for viruses in my e-mails before it even gets into my Outlook Express, which also scans them. And mostof the stuff I get is from friends who also have yahoo mail, orcomcast or AOL,soI know there stuff is getting scanned also. Besides that I never open any questionable attatchments.

I am trying to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling my Norton stuff, because I have dialup and it would take me forever to get my updates back up to par!!!!

So i'm hoping someone has an idea what might be the problem? By the way i've had my Norton stuff on here for months and it's only recently started doing this. And I know how to do all the program settings, etc. It's just recently decided to start giving me trouble.

    Thank You
    Roger

    Hi Roger,

These questions assume OS is XP:
Did you recently install SP2? Norton has had issues with it.
Is your built-in Windows Firewall turned OFF?
What changes have you made to your machine recently?

This may get a better response if you post it is Software Forum.

Sorry about the lack of info!!!!

I'm currently running windows 2000 pro sp4, and have been every since this particular computer was set up for my mother in law. There hasn't been any changes made to it recently other than a couple of windows security updates, but I was having this problem before that. Everything was going smoothly for months until about a month ago.

    Thank You
    Roger

    Hi Roger,

Sorry to say that I am not particularly familiar with Norton (or Windows 2000, for that matter)! My initial suggestion to post a query in the Software Forum may indeed provide a better response.

My first response would have been to ask you to do what you would like to avoid: Reinstall Norton!

Do you get any error messages when autoprotect gets disabled?
Did you try the Symantec site for answers? For example: This Page.

If you'd like, go ahead and attach a HijackThis log so we can rule out malware as a cause. Other than that, I'm not sure how much help I will be here!

    PP :)
