Just purchased Norton 2006 Firewall and Systemworks and have been currently using the 2004 version but felt I needed a change and besides the bundle was almost as cheap as the combined subscription renewal!

Anyway, 2006 does not have GoBack which is superb so, I uninstalled all of the 2004 except the GoBack, installed 2006 with no hitches what-so-ever. Started surfing, brilliant! Then after about 5 - 6 pages the pages started to fail to open and just stuck there in no-mans land trying to open. So I closed the browser (I am using Mozilla Firefox) and tried again with the same consequences, a white screen with the page trying to load.

After much growling and hair pulling I rebooted and I was able to open pages and browse until I got to about 6 pages, again! So, I thought OK I will try and see if there are anymore updates and there were adn after that no problems.

I turned the computer on this morning ad after 5 - 6 pages it stopped loading and just stayed as a white screen. After a reboot and check for updates of which there were none I came here.

So, if anyone can offer some advice on what the problem may be I would be grateful. I know all the things that people have said about Norton, but in 10 years this is the only problem I have faced rolleyes

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

While I cannot be 100% sure based on your info, it does not sound like malware. It really sounds more like an issue with Norton.

The fastest thing you could try to confirm this is to uninstall ALL of Norton and then see how things work. Don't try disabling the startups of services using MSconfig. This will not yield the same results as uninstalling.

If uninstalling does not help or you just do not want to try, you will have to work thru the below so we can check for malware, but I repeat that you may not be getting hit by malware.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Hi and thanks for the help. I do realise that the issue was not Malware as I regularly run Pest Patrol and the necessary checks with Norton.

Now, this is really weird as I have never heard of this or encountered it before but for some reason the 'problem' has sorted itself out without having to do anything. I have not and will not bother trying to contact Symantec as they delete all emails and charge you for each call, wanting your credit card details, but it is weird how now there 'seems' to be no problem.

It is so damn annoying but what can I say? Anyway, thank you so much for the advice and although I am not particularly technically minded I do understand your instructions.

Once again thank you for the offered help but fortunately all seems to be normal for now.

    Thank you!

    You're welcome.

That does not mean that you are not infected. Thousands of people that have those tools installed and running are infected daily.

I'm not sure what happened but perhaps it was just an issue with your firewall recognizing things.
