I was having troubles that Norton could not fix, so i followed it's link and tried npe.
my computer is now missing necessary dlls.

I run a windows xp 32 (unsure of service pack, sorry).

I tried what was suggested in the other posts:

But i have a slight problem,

For F8 i only get what i want to load off of, nothing else. No advanced options.

I have windows xp installation cds so i tried one.

    I start from disk.

    I press r.

i go through, but exe files will not start(ie: notepad, farbar)

so i try a system restore

    denied

    re-enter system restore

    no snapshot

    so i try 42
    and 41
and all the way down to 20
    no snapshots

    any suggestions?

Farbar does not run on XP> you should never try doing a fix that was meant for someone else's problem.

Have you tried doing a repair install?

Automated system recovery or via the recovery console?

The asr wants a floppy disk i do not have.

The recovery console seem to be similar to the command prompt, except less freedom.

A repair install requires the XP install disc.

the automated system recovery from the xp disk asks for the windows automated system recovery disk to be put in the floppy drive

i will not be back until tonight or tomorrow

If you never created a recovery disc, you have to do a repair install.

okay, so i am obviously missing a step here.

when i put the install disk in do i wait until the screen that says

To setup XP now press ENTER
To repair a Windows install using Recovery Console press R
To quit setup without installing XP press F3

if so do i press r and look at the recovery console?

if not can i get a step by step instruction?

Boot to the cd. To do that, first go into the bios and change the boot order to CD as first boot device. Put the XP cd in the drive and boot. One you are in the cd, choose install. It will look for previous installations and give you a prompt where you can choose R to do a repair install. Then just follow the prompts.

I am afraid you are screwed and can only now do a clean install. Is this a laptop?

You can try installing a clean copy of XP on the unused hard drive and then slave the other hard drive and see if you can get into it to retrieve your data and files.

I suggest you post in the software forum as this is not a forum for these issues. ;)
