    Hello Majorgeeks!

Cleaning a church friend's laptop. Her initial complaint sounded like virus activity to me. I didn't see any of this when working on it. It could sorely use a RAM upgrade - this whole process took FOREVER because the system is slow, just due to lack of ram I think. One thing that did persist was a sound issue - it was crackly, distorted, jumpy...making me wonder if it isn't a sound card issue or something?

Did some housecleaning, ran the scans. Please check the logs and let me know if you see anything suspicious hiding...

    Thanks!

    Hello,insan_art

The installed RAM in this machine is the minimum that we suggest for Windows XP.

*Consider updating this outdated browser Mozilla Firefox (3.6.10) to the current version -> Mozilla Firefox 3 3.6.15 Final

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Step 1:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 2:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      [IMG]
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 3:
Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    Step 4:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 5:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    Hi dr. moriarty,

I'm sorry - the sticker on the machine indicated it originally came with 512mb. I never looked into the system properties to confirm this - I assumed that is all it had since it seemed slow and I didn't think that the owner would have upgraded the ram herself - however, I found out that she purchased the laptop from the local computer shop (which sucks), so I'm guessing they upgraded the ram?

Anyways, completed your last set of instructions. I had no problems. Attached is the MG log.

The system is still taking it's time starting up. Once it's all up and running, it is rather quick for the most part. The sound is still clunky - choppy especially during start-up when the Windows "welcome music" plays. When I was quickly opening and closing Windows explorer windows, there seemed to be a bit of a lag between clicking on stuff and it actually responding. However, once things are all warmed up, I have no problem running other things - even Firefox loads up lightning fast.

    Thanks!

    Hello, insan_art

I'm not seeing any malware related issues. However, I suggest that you create a new thread in our Software Forum for advice about trimming down the large amount of processes running at startup. That and increasing the total RAM installed should help greatly.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
