Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 - Help please

I recently installed the latest drivers for my geforce FX.. However, this have been screwing up all over the place. Games that require direct X will not play if I have hardware acceleration set to the max. When I set it down just low enough so direct3d and direct draw are disabled, I can play games. I have a nvidia geforce FX 5600 w/ 256 mb.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

 

If you reinstalled the drivers I would look there use this driver cleaner program
Follow the instructions to the letter,then reinstall the new ones,make sure they are the officiall 71.84 from nvidia's site.

which drivers are you useing? and make sure u got rid of the previous ones before upgrading. It would probably be best to reinstall the drivers.

 

I have the latest drivers from nvidia. I uninstalled the current ones, installed those, and it still does the same thing. Whenever I try to run a program, I get a black screen and the entire computer is frozen.

 

Ok, Update here. I ran the DirectX diagnostic tool, the direct3D failed off the bat ( My comp froze ) and the directdraw test went fine until it went fullscreen.. Then my froze.. again. So, it is fullscreens that mess me up now.

 

Did you use the the driver cleaner "this is really important".what order did you use the driver cleaner in?

 

Yea, I used the driver cleaner. I uninstalled nvidia from add/remove programs.. Rebooted to safe mode.. ran driver cleaner, rebooted to windows this time.. and installed 71.84. I still have the same problem.

 

How about a fresh Directx install?Are you running 9.0c at mo?heres a direct x uninstaller I havn't used it but looks the best,try just reinstalling directx first without using it 9.0c you want.

I did this as well. I uninstalled directx ( I had 9.0c previously ), downloaded 9.0c again and installed it.

 

Right,so your comp crapped out when you installed the new drivers,but fresh driver install and directx didn't fix it,so next thing to look are the video card settings and agp driver,the video card settings will have return to default,try adjusting the performance slider in the gfx card options and check it isn't running in pci mode,could you post all the specs of your comp and operating system

 

Performancer slider.. Would that be hardware accelerator? If not, Please tell me what it is. Also, how do I check the video card settings ( the pci slot, etc settings )

Never used win 2000 but I should imagine its simliar sorry "image slider"
Rightclick desktop-properties-settings-advanced-there should be a tab for all your 5600 thats where all its options are including the image-performance slider.
Once 5600 tab is clicked it sould also show the stats of your card memory,agp,pci,driver version ect.It should say agpx4 since its an old board,so fiddle around with some of the the image settings.If you wanna skip that the next step is to update the chipset driver you have a via vt8363 chipset its a unified driver so there is only one called the hyperion

One thing I would do regardless of the above problem is to update your VIA drivers and motherboard drivers.

I don't know when you updated your VIA drivers, but VIA would have to write the most problematic and useless drivers I have ever seen.

The only good thing about them is they have regular updates to fix each recurring monumental stuff up.

As far as AGP 2 or 4, it depends on what the motherboard supports.

If it's only AGP 2X then you can't just turn it up.

Read your manual or check the manufaturer's website for what it is.

 

if you download sysoft sandra and run it,it should tell you the supported agp speed and current agp speed of your motherboard,it may also throw a few diagnostic clues our way.

I couldn't see from the posts if you've tried this yet, but have you tried going back to an older driver version? I've had my comp freeze with new ATI drivers occasionally, which was easily fixed by a revert to the older driver versions.

 

Like PC Jedi Master says if the old driver works go for it.
And did you overclock your Graphic card?
Did you check out device manager for your geforce?
And make sure the driver was meant for your purticular model.
Did you do any bios tuning,manualy opened your tower,do a registry repair after the
new driver installed etc?

 

I open my tower a lot ( I just recently put in a new harddrive in the secondary slave IDE.. A week after my directx etc stopped working )


@Kada and jedi.. I am currently searching for my original driver disk.. I can't find it though :S. I have easily 900+ CD's lying in the 100 CD stacks.. I shall keep searching though.

 

Did you open up the tower just before you updated the driver,when it stoped working.
If device manager shows your device as working,maybe the graphic device integrated RAM might have died.
Anybody knows if it is possible to use the system RAM for the graphic device?

 

Ignore my last post regarding your video RAM,i was confusing another problem with yours.

 

I used to have a 5200 card and I couldn't set it to 4x even though I knew my board could handle that ... I had to enable fast writes, you can do that either in the advanced display properties or failing that the BIOS .. iirc in the advanced chipset features section

 

Well.. The AGP 2x is not the problem.. Whenever I try to run say.. Counterstrike for example.. It does not work.. Doesnt' even give me the console. Just a black screen. If I try to run NFSU2, it works however. The directdraw and direct3d tests ( in the dxdiag program ) do not work.. It freezes just as the games do.

 

The new VIA drivers worked.. I think I installed the wrong ones last time when trying to update everything.. I can now play games in windowed modes, but when it comes to fullscreen, it still freezes on me.
