    Hey guys.
    Had a little bit of trouble with this particular system of late.
    Apparently it had some version of the MBR virus sinowal and Alureon (spelling?) detected with MSE.
    Did some cleanup and all seemed fine for a while. Then some system files associated with the Windows Presentation Font system seemed to get corrupted. Along with general system slowdown at times that didnt seem right.
    Since this has taken place I've done a clean reformat on the system. No major symptoms but HDD activity seems unusual at times.

    Here are the requested logs if someone would be so kind as to browse over them for me and check the health of the system.

    Kind Regards,
    Paul

    One more thing before I forget.
    "LG5TOOL.EXE" detected by SuperAntiSpyware is a false positive. It was a tool I used to bypass the need to do the recent PS3 firmware update. As I use linux on the system but also played multiplayer games. (thanks sony. but thats another story isnt it. :confused )
    Came from a trusted source. But just to be sure its since been removed as the workaround no longer works anyway.

    Cheers.

    Why are you using this machine without having any antivirus software installed? And what about a third party firewall?

    Please rename cf.exe back to ComboFix.exe

    Do you know what the below is which shows in your HJT log and runkeys log?

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    UTA

    File::
    c:\docume~1\Paul\LOCALS~1\Temp\UTA.exe

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      [IMG]

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Hey.
    Thanks for the prompt responce.

    Without going into debates I choose not to run antivirus software. I do however run my own hardware firewall on top of a routed dsl connection. Am somewhat a tech myself so this is actually the first time seeking outside help for such an issue(rarely have them).

    Unsure about that line from HJT. It stood out to me also. I do use the show desktop button an awful lot but unsure how thats connected. Otherwise I do not know. Generally have a very light boot and background process. Dislike systems that are clogged up with a lot of bloat. ;)

    Here are the requested logs. Appreciate your time.

    You're very welcome. :)

    That's fine, and that's your decision to make, but may I point out that should you ever need us in the future, the fact that you do not have AV installed could well mean that you will be refused assistance.

    Okay let;s do the below:

    Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • Java(TM) 6 Update 19

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Registry::
    [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
    "ShowDeskFix"=-

    Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Firstly let me change my wording. I don't 'not' use virus programs. I just choose not to run 'active' programs as they often cause more problems then they may fix (my opinion). Regular scans by such programs are definately a good idea though and this is what I choose to do instead. Along with firewalls/good pc cleanup practise/users having half a brain that use the network and so on and so forth. :-D

    But point taken none the less. I do appreciate your time going over these logs.
    Speaking of which I was blown away when you said about grabbing a new java as I'm usually on the ball with drivers and codecs, namely java/flash and the other exploitables. But sure enough there was a new update, released yesterday.. haha. Bit tough on me there. PC has been offline. :p

    Attached the new logs. Thanks again.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Tools are all cleaned up. Will let you know how the system goes.
    Just pulled a HDD out of it yesterday that seemed to improve boot times. So it may be a failing drive too which would explain those corrupt system files earlier.

    Thank you once again for your time. :)
