Ok, im retarted, really retarted. I dont know how to partition my drive

    I started with the Configuring A Dual-Boot Windows2000/XP & Linux System

But I dont know how to use fdisk, cant figure it out for the life of me.
Cant download Knoppix... Firefox wont let me and neither will IE.. maybe im doing it wrong.

I feel so stupid that cant figure out how to do something this simple, so maybe i should give up all together before i really break something :(

OK, is your whole hard drive represented by C, you can't shrink to the left, only increase into unallocated space to the right using fdisk. I haven't tried the Kubuntu tools for this yet. Maybe someone else has already done it. Your only other option would be a 3rd party partitioning tool. As I set my drives especially to multi-boot, this isn't a problem for me.

ok heres what my drive looks like... I dont see anywhere on there to make a partition or use fdisk.. if i could find out how to do this... im sure the rest will follow.

Other than using a 3rd-party partition program, I believe the simplest option would be to reformat, creating your partitions before Windows installs. Others may have better advice / knowledge.. no matter how you do it, be sure to back up anything you don't want to lose before you start.

As I suspected, your C drive takes up all the space and you need a minimum of 5GB unallocated space for Linux to do it's thing. Let me see if I can shrink a partition with Kubuntu. I'll just use my Vista install as it's empty now.

OK, here's my current partitions. The ones marked as unknown are the Linux ones, and ya, probably overkill sizewise.

I tried gparted and got scared as this isn't a test system, you'll have to wait for the expert. ;)

Ok I've sorta figured out why i cant make a partition.. I read that to make one you need to click on the un-allocated space and choose "new partition" but as my screen shot indicated in a previous post... I dont have any un-allocated space.

So i guess the question would be then.. can i re-allocated the space?? and if so how?

If anyone can answer me that, I will be soooo grateful!!!! Thanx :wave

Not without a third party tool. XP won't do it.

I use Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8. Great tool, but it's a few hundred dollars. ;>(

Which distro are you trying dyamond?

Most have built in tools to resize your partition, and they don't cost a penny ;)

Well, I thought I had to create my own partition (which I havent a clue because I dont have any un-allocated space.. heck if I know how to make it allocated) as stated as step 1 of the configuring a dual boot sticky.. but maybe I misinterperted it.

I downloaded PCLinuxOS2007 and burned it to a cd but I havent run it yet.
If it'll create one for me then YAY! that save me some time and frustration. (hopefully.. see how much trouble im havin already?? LOL)

I didnt know if i was supposed pop in the cd, run it and let it do whatever it needs to do... still kinda lost.

    Sorry

ok, I tried the step that they suggested and this is what i got...

I inserted the disk... restarted and windows loaded.... ok it didnt work lets find out why.. when i go to manually open it from inside of windows this is what i get:

    http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?Ext=iso

Am i utterly hopeless? you can tell me.. i'll stop wasting your time :(

Sounds like your system is configured to boot from the hard drive first. When you start the boot process there will be something flashed on the screen telling what to do to enter setup.

You are going to have to take a look at setup and change the boot sequence to try to boot the cd before the hard drive.

Cannot be more helpful - entering setup and modifying it depends on the hardware and the bios on that hardware.

Nah, the .ISO image file just wasn't burnt correctly! You'll need to burn it using a program capable of translating that image into the disc's contents.

Nero is capable of doing it (though use caution - there are many utilities in Nero that will do the same thing).

I prefer IMGBurn, which is specifically made for this task.
