Fresh / new install on PC. Am using Avast 5.0.545 (free) as resident AV but was looking to install an on-demand AV scanner.

I was leaning towards Antivir free.

Would appreciate comments from users who have installed an on-demand AV scanner in addition to their resident AV.

    Cheers

I personally like Comodo Internet Security - resident AV, on-demand AV, firewall, etc. all in one (and it's free!).

Replacing Avast with AntiVir? You can't run both together.

Since you already have an on demand virus scanner, you should only add on demand scanners such as MBAM and SAS.

Many thanks for your replies. Perhaps I did not make myself clear enough.

I have Avast 5.0.545 running as resident scanner. It has an on-demand scan feature.

What I wanted to do was install another AV app ie AntiVir to run as an on-demand scanner only. So when installing say AntiVir I do not install the resident scanning engine.

End result, I have my resident AV scanner Avast which I can select on-demand scans and an additional on-demand AV scanner only ie AntiVir.

Alternatively, I could have installed AntiVir as my resident scanner and installed Avast (without any of the Shield modules) as an on-demand AV scanner.

Having 2 AV apps is of course not good if both are set to be resident scanners as they will conflict. But so long as one AV is set to resident and the other AV as on-demand only this will work in much the same way as having MBAN or SAS installed.

I have tested this set up ie Avast resident AntiVir on-demand only, in my VM and it seems to work ok but just wanted some further feed back from users who have this type of set up first.

Reason for having the additional on-demand AV scanner is that no single AV app is fullproof. So rather than doing an online AV scan, running a Linux AV scan or sending files to Jotti or Total Virus, I can just scan with another AV prog.

    Cheers
