On the verge of buying an Alienware M17x...

Hey guys,

I've come here in the past and had great advice when it came to buying my gaming PC, I'm wondering if any of you kind folk can offer some on my current potential purchase.

I'm on the verge of buying an Alienware M17x.

And as I bow to your greater knowledge on these subjects, I was wondering if anyone can either persuade or warn me on this...? perhaps there are cheaper alternatives?

There is no perhaps about that, there are cheaper alternatives. Are you buying this to use it as your primary gaming system, or as a portable alternative to an existing gaming desktop? Laptops can't be upgraded to nearly the same extent as desktops, and one of the trade-offs of all that portability is that you lose out in power.

So whether this is a good purchase for you or not depends a lot on what you want out of it, and what you expect from it now, and a year or two from now.

In my personal opinion the spec you get from Dell (who own Alienware) costs much more than it should.

For starters, try www.pcspecialist.co.uk (if you are in the UK) as they will be able to offer a similar spec at a lower price.

With Alienware you are paying more for a fancy bit of plastic on the case and a logo, on top of Dell's already inflated prices.

What was the exact spec you were looking at?
