I have an IBM Thinkpad R40 running Windows XP. After going into a website the system was badly corrupted. When trying to boot up now I get a screen saying: "We appologize for the inconvenince, but windows did not start successfully....." I am given the options of "Safe mode," "safe mode with network" .... and normal. However all 4 options bring me to a blue screen that says: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer...." Then it reboots and the process starts again.

Is there anything I can do besides reformat?

I can select the "Access IBM" button which allows me into this area. This includes the option to reformat from a partition.

On Compaqs there is a choice for you to only rewrite the OS files. There should be something like that on IBM as well.
