I am running Outlook 2003 and Gmail and want to synch them up, but I cannot seem to get the two to work together.

I have followed all the procedures that I've found on the net as well as Google's own instructions, but something does not seem to be working. Does anybody know of some tricks to get this working?

1)Enable POP in your Gmail account.
    2)Open Outlook 2003.
3)Click the Tools menu, and select E-mail Accounts...
4)Select Add a new e-mail account, and click Next.
5)Choose POP3 as your server type by clicking the radio button, and click Next.
6)Fill in all necessary fields to include the following information:
    User Information
Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From: field of outgoing messages.
Email Address: Enter your full Gmail email address (username@gmail.com)
    Server Information
    Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.gmail.com
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com

    Login Information
User Name: Enter your Gmail username (including @gmail.com)
    Password: Enter your Gmail password
7)Click More Settings... and then click the Outgoing Server tab.
8)Check the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
9)Click the Advanced tab, and check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) under Incoming Server (POP3).
10)Check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) under Outgoing Server (SMTP), and enter 465 in the Outgoing server (SMTP) box.
    11)Click OK.
Click Test Account Settings... but I never recieve "Congratulations"

    1. On the mail client (i.e. Outlook Express), click on Tools > Accounts. Click the Mail tab, and then click on the Properties button.

    2. Click the Servers tab, and see if the "Log On using Secure Password Aunthentication" check box is selected. If it is selected, clear it. See if that makes a difference.

Maybe you are missing THIS part of the setup:
10)Check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) under Outgoing Server (SMTP), and enter 465 in the Outgoing server (SMTP) box. Incoming server (POP 3):995
    Outgoing server (SMPT):465
    Click finish

And you followed these steps FIRST at Gmail?
Make sure POP access is turned on for your Gmail account.
To enable POP access to your Gmail account with any email client:
Choose Settings from the top Gmail navigation bar.
Select the Forwarding and POP tab.
Make sure either Enable POP for all mail or Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on is selected.
Choose Enable POP for all mail if you want to download mail previously received at your Gmail account. Otherwise, select Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on.
Select the action you want applied to mail after you have downloaded it to your email client under When messages are accessed with POP.
    Click Save Changes.
    Set Up Your Email Client

Also, because GMAIL uses a SSL connection and unusual ports, it is more likely to run into problems with Antivirus email scanning and firewalls than most other accounts.

It might be a good idea to quickly try it with the firewall temporarily disabled or in safe mode with networking if applicable (doesn't always get you on-line, depending on how you connect; tap 'F8' while the computer is starting out to get the option), and with email scanning specifically disabled withen your Antivi menu, if possible.

Thank you for all your help. I've done everything suggested. The best I get is that at least now I find outgoing mail server (SMTP), find incoming mail server (POP3) and log into incoming mail server (POP3) but my test e-mail fails.

    any suggestions? i'm almost there.

Seems to me that if you've done everything the way it's supposed to be done then there is either a problem with Outlook.....your antivirus email scanning..... or a firewall blocking the ports.
Did you recieve an error message for the failed Test email?

  13. deliahoobervitz

    deliahoobervitz Private E-2

failure notice says - Send test e-mail message: Unable to send test Message. Please verify the E-mail Address field.

My E-mail Address Field has my correct e-mail address for G-Mail is it supposed to have a different address???

All I can think of is to try another test message, but send it to yourself at a different email address you have.
If that one fails then try going to Gmail webmail and send yourself a message to a different email address you have.
That will help narrow down whether it's an Outlook prob....or Gmail prob.

Change the port to 587, see if that works.

I tried the 587, but that didn't work. right now what my outlook does is that it connects to gmail and downloads my e-mails, but if I try to send an e-mail from outlook it will time out. It cannot connect back to the server? to send the e-mail.

    very odd.

I will try webmail and follow up.

    Try THIS:
On Outlook's Toolbar click Tools>Accounts>Your Gmail account>Properties and set the server timeout higher.
The pic is what I have in Outlook Express.

I have tried extending the server time as suggested. i've sent e-mail from webmail and it works. problem must lie with outlook?

so as of now I can connect and download from gmail, but I am unable to send e-mails through outlook.

In the account name, delete "@gmail.com" (The account name will be "user" not "user@gmail.com").

    See if that works.

Disable your anti-virus and see if you can send.

Since Outlook is part of Office and a whole lot of folks are currently having problems with Office Apps, maybe you should read the last post in this thread:

    It's worth a shot...

I've disabled my firewall and also downloaded any applicable microsoft patches and security bulletins. Also scanning for any malware with new microsoft tool.

Nothing's changed. Will update after scan of entire system is complete.

Not just the firewall......disable the anti-virus also and try it.

What happens when you try to actually send a message (not the "test
account" button)? The error message you get when you try to send will be
much more useful than the one that the "test account" gives you.

We have to solve this, it's a mission now. :D

Task pop.gmail.com - Sending reported error (0x800CC0F): The connection to the server was interrupted if this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider.
