    Fellow travelers,

I am unable to open any attachments with Outlook Express. I cannot save them either. When I attemp to save the attachment it tells me there was an error and I should check my free disk space- which is more than adequate. This began after I loaded Firefox 1.5 and began using it as my browser. It did not happen right away but I can't think of anything else I have changed recently. I use Panda as a firewall and virus check. I use Webroot as spyware sleuth. I am not sure how to approach the problem. I scanned my machine for viruses and found a couple which I cleaned up but the attachments still do not open. Help would be appreciated. I use XP Pro with all current updates.

I dont use Outlook Express, but sounds like a security options thing in Outlook rather than a browser thing. Maybie your security settings in outlook are too high?
    Just an idea, good luck:confused:

Thanks Franklin but that doesn't seem to be the problem. My settings have not changed for quite some time. I checked thru the settings and didn't see anything that might cause the problem.

See if this works for the prob.
    Start Internet Explorer
Select the Tools > Internet Options menu
    Select the [Programs] tab
Look for a checkbox labelled "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser"
If this checkbox is not ticked, then this could be the cause of the problem, so tick it!
    Click OK
    Re-open Outlook Express.

If still no joy try this.

    1. Click Start, click Run, type (or copy paste) the following command in the Open box, and then click OK:

    Regsvr32.exe %Windir%\System32\Ole32.dll

    2. In the RegSvr32 dialog box, click OK.

    Franklin,

Thanks for the advise. The checkbox was checked in Explorer so that was not the problem. I entered the info for the .dll but that didn't solve the problem. I have a suspicion that you are on the right track. I think I have somehow deleted or corrupted a .dll file but the one you gave me apparently was not the culprit. Thnaks for trying.

Maybe try cleaning out temporary internet files and the contents of start->run: %temp%.

Have you stored large amounts of emails in your folders?
Outlook Express struggles with bulging folders, and it may well be worth either cleaning out the folders, or moving them over.
The simple way to do that is to find your OE folder file by doing a search for folders.dbx in windows, and the renaming it folders.old.
Next time you start up OE, it will make a new folder set.. If you need your old email correspondence it will be in the folders.old file.
Failing that, I dug up a wealth of stuff here:

Hi bob - if its not an overloaded OE folder as has been mentioned and it is a crook dll or similar system file in the bowels of XP have your Xp install disk ready and do a system file check.
Click on Run and type this without the quote marks "sfc /scannow"
    Cheers

Robert and everyone who has helped,

Last Saturday I unloaded my email files as you suggested. That proved not to be the problem. I will use the scannow technique and let you know how it turns out. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have exactly the problem as rbaker and would like to know an answer. If it is any consolation rbaker, if you run Thunderbird you can import the mail and open the attachments there.
Not an entirely satisfactory solution though.Derek F

    Derek,

Thanks. I did go to Thunderbird to solve the problem. Never did figure out what the problem was. I think some .dll file was lost or corrupted.
