P4V88+ Any Good?

So I am thinking of buying an AsRock P4V88+ MB and picking up a 2.8/3.0 Ghz celeron for it, to replace a 1.8 mobo/cpu combo in one of my systems. Any thoughts on whether this is a good or bad combo?

I looked it over it looks fine for an AGP board w/ socket 478. It's 'older' technology but it looks OK. Why not go with a newer socket 775 mobo with PCIX? In any case, try to stay away from Celeron CPU's or any socket 478 motherboards, just my personal opinion....

Well its was really a short term solution, I need to run a rig that requires a 2.8Ghz cpu to work correctly, and I dont want to fork out a load of money on a new all singing dual core system just yet. It would replace a Gigabyte board with a 478 socket which has for the most part been pretty good.

The other problem with going for a newer board is that I have to upgrade everything else as well, PCI express being a good example, although the AGP version is good to see. However my experience of AMD is poor, and although celeron is pretty hit and miss, I have had two Duron based systems that were very unreliable so I generally stick with intel systems. However, thanks for the info I will have another look at AMD and see what it can offer.

 

I do though take your point about socket 775 and might well go this path and get a 640 cpu.
