Password protect a folder for Windows XP

I made a thread about this a while ago, and I was recommended software that was basically a virus which (for some odd reason) turned the folder that I wanted to password protect into a link to the control panel. You may think I'm leaving something out, but it's really just as ridiculous as it sounds. Two other users tested the software with the same results.

So I was wondering if I could possibly get a better recommendation. I have Windows XP. I would have to ask that this time, when you recommend me software, please be sure about it's reliability.

    Thanks.

    Hi

I would give TrueCrypt a try, its free and opensource, documentation on how to create an encrypted volume folder is here http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/

This software is very reliable and powerful and recomended by many security specialists, its not your normal password a folder type app, and uses a virtual drive mechanism.

Flashcrypt is also another good option.

Could always use a very neat trick in password protecting a ZIP file, create a New Folder then right click and Send to Compressed Zip folder (note you can add more files to it at later date) then rigth click the folder and choose Explore > click File and choose Add a Password

What do you mean by an encrypted volume folder? What is a volume folder? Whatever it is, I'm just looking to keep absolutely everything about this folder the same, except that it asks for a password when you click on it.

    :)

If I'm not mistaken, sikvik - Glary Utilities will only encrypt files, not folders.

    Hi

A volume folder is like a virtual hard drive, the instructions link I posted will tell all about what this is and how to create, but Flashcrypt is more to what you are after.

Thanks for the help. But is Flashcrypt capable of making the folder literally the same thing, with the exception that it asks for a passsword when you click on it?

    A couple of notes:
    • Move the original folder to your desired location before password protecting it - a shortcut will no longer work.
    • Large folders take some time to protect/un-protect in my testing - in the area of 1 minute for a 300mb size folder. (Tested on a 2.2ghz/1gb RAM machine)
