Cannot connect in IE or Firefox to any anti-virus web sites.

Couldn't run the other steps because the OP Sys is XP 64 Professional.

Please attach the log from running the C:\MGTools.exe --> C:\MGLogs.zip.

Why am I not seeing any anti-virus software on this system?

The only thing I am seeing now is this:
C:\WINDOWS\tasks\uvzrtlmr.job --> use windows explorer to find and delete it.

Can you download an AV program from MG's? You should pick one from this list:
How to Protect yourself from malware!

I deleted AVG Free after this virus hit, because apparently it didn't protect the computer.

"C:\WINDOWS\tasks\uvzrtlmr.job --> use windows explorer to find and delete it."

Removed it, still cannot connect to anti-virus web sites and occasionally a visit to any web site is hijacked to some other site.

I was trying to come to this site to see other recommendations for anti-virus when I first realized the browsers on that computer couldn't/wouldn't connect to anti-virus sites.

Malwarebytes shows the computer as virus free.

Spybot Search and Destroy shows it as clean.

Yet I still cannot connect to anti-virus web sites.

I was not seeing any malware in the logs. But we are limited as to what we can run on a 64 bit system. I would suggest that you first install some AV program and run it to see what it may pick up.

Don't know if this is related, but every so often a pop up warning appears saying "host process for windows has stopped working".

Hummm.....let's then try resetting your host files:

Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.

    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    • It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
    • Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
    • Click the Make Writeable? button. (if you only see a Make Read-Only selection, it is already writeable so skip this button).
    • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program

Downloaded and installed Avira, one of the recommended packages.

The log is attached, it found no problems.

Downloaded and ran Hostsxpert. It didn't solve the issue.

Allow me some time to consult with Chaslang about this. Perhaps he will have a clue.

Download OTL by Old Timer. and save it to your Desktop.

    * Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
    * Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
    * Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
    * Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
    * Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
    * When done, two Notepad files will open.
    o OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    o Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
    * Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply.

Can you access websites using their IP address? Does this occur in every browser? Have you reset your router back to factory settings?

Did you try accessing the sites in each browser by using the ip address instead of a url? Can you get to any online scanners:

    Using BitDefender Online Scan?

What happens if you remove all your protection software, run CCLeaner, reboot and then try to access the sites?

Regarding accessing the sites by IP address:

    - I can access the sites by their root, for example one is bleepingcomputer.com. Once there I can visit the forums, but cannot link directly from the google listing of a forum post - then it redirects.

    - I can access via the IP address

    - It seems it only re-directs when I click on a link from a search, like Google or Yahoo

    Trying the other things now.

BitDefender log attached. When I saved as, the only option was HTML, so I saved that as a .txt.

After that and the CCleaner etc., the problem persists.

We need to run an OTL Fix

    • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
    • Copy and Paste the following code into the [IMG] textbox. Do not include the word Code
      Code:
      :otl
      @Alternate Data Stream - 489 bytes -> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TEMP:05EE1EEF
      @Alternate Data Stream - 116 bytes -> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TEMP:436DEE1E

      :commands
      [EMPTYTEMP]
      [REBOOT]

    • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
    • Click [IMG].
    • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.

Have you disabled any firewall you have installed?

To the best of my knowledge no firewall is currently running.

I am not finding any reason for your issues. I assume you have cleaned out your IE temp files? And did you tell me this happens in both IE and Firefox? Can you run ATF Cleaner by Atribune?
