PCI Serial Controller? (For Win 98 SE)

I just installed Windows 98 SE on an old Pentium 2 (333 MHz) with a NIC and a 56k V90 modem for a friend's kids for Christmas. The modem is installed and the NIC works on my cable, but I have a yellow question mark in Device Manager that says I'm missing something called a PCI Serial Controller. Looks as though it's probably a driver of some sort, but I've never heard of it.

I've searched for a driver called that, and come up empty-handed. The mobo is an Intel 740 (i740), the modem an AOpen SVV, and the sound is onboard and working fine. Display drivers are in place and working fine. Everything seems to be okay, but I have no discs that solve the missing PCI Serial Controller problem, and I haven't found anything downloadable on the Web.

Anyone know what this is and how I solve it?

    Hi Wisewiz.

PCI serial controller drivers are usually found on the Win 98 CD, maybe if you go online and get a windows update it may download.

The other thing to try is: start-settings, control panel-add new hardware, and let windows find the new hardware when it finds the the serial controller, you need to select, install drivers from a location, and then it will ask you where do I search from? That is when you have the windows 98 disc in the drive, and it should install from one of the cab files located on your disc.

    Wave, I'll try 'er!

Scouse, wouldn't the Windows installation put 'em in if they were on the CD? I tried making the Reinstall Driver utility search the Win 98 CD, and had no luck. I'll try again if Wavetar's suggestion doesn't work.

    Thanks, team!

Sorry, just re-read your post and realised that what you are missing is the modem driver, you will have to pull the card and find out what chipset is on it [unless you are very lucky and the modem card tells you what make it is]

When you get the chipset number google it and download the drivers, you should be ok then

    Thanks, ST!

That was the answer. I pulled the card and Googled the numbers to Zoltrix, the original manufacturer (before Conexant bought it), then found the dirvers I needed. Went into Device Manager and removed both the modem and the persistent PCI Serial Controller error, then expanded the driver files to a hard drive folder and rebooted. The old Winders 98 said it had found a new PCI Serial Controller that it needed to install (dernit!). I told it to look in the hard drive folder, and after a few dozen clicks or so, the modem was up and running and the PCI S C issue was history.

Thanks to all of you members of the crack MG Team. Success again, with a little help from my friends!

    Best of 2005 to all.
