Hi, I recently damaged the pins on my P4 2.53ghz 512/533/1.5v and instead of just replacing it with the exact same chip, I'd rather upgrade it. My question is, what is the best upgrade I can buy without having to make further upgrades to other hardware?(straight replacement).
I've been told to look for processors that support 478 socket if that helps.

The chip I have looked at is Intel Pentium® 4 3.066GHz Prescott (800MHz) 1MB cache OEM (just over £100). Will this work? Is there any better?

Any help or direction is much appreciated.

Hi m8, i damaged the pins on the ide socket on my hard drive once... cost me, but now i have a 200gb sata :D lol

I used to have the 3.0Ghz Prescott 478 and went thru numerous coolers, cos it gos so damn hot 86 degrees it got to once!

I soon decided to go AMD mainly for the reason that they ran cooler, and were better for gaming.

Deffinatley make sure your motherboard socket is 478 before you buy anything!

If you game alot AMD is the way foward, u can get a new motherboard and processor for about £130 now. I have a gigabyte mobo and the Athlon 64 3500+ Tis fairley quick and it does everything it needs to.

If you dont want to change your motherboard etc etc that processor should work fine, just be prepared for some serious heat!!

    Hope this helped.

If you upgrade, the fsb will be 200x4, all 478 chips are not the same, yours fsb is actually 133x4, so be sure your board will accept a 200x4 fsb. ed

Ive got a 478 3.0ghz p4 and its great, overclocked it to 3.6 with water but thats kinda expensive  At stock speeds with the stock cooler it never went above 55C so u should be OK. They used to make an Extreme Edition 478 but i think its discontinued.

I will say it again, be sure your mother board will run at 200 fsb, if it wont you are gaining nothing. The new cpu will run at 133 fsb, not 200x4. ed

Well the board is for sure Socket 478, they only made the 2.53 for Socket 478. A decent upgrade would be the 2.8 if you can only do 533fsb.

Thank you all for replying. Tunered, how would I find this info? This is relatively new to me, so I'm having difficulty understanding your terminology. I could tell you the exact P4 that I have if it helps http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL6D8

    I have a Medion 2530 PC MT5

If you only want to upgrade your CPU, go for a 2.8 socket 478 which are quite inexpensive and you could clock it easilly to 3Ghz with a decent cooller. Alternatively, just buy the 3Ghz.

Are you saying that I would be able to buy the 3ghz, even with my motherboard saying that it can only run a 2.6ghz max cpu?

I was assuming you could get a skt478 3.00ghz CPU. Not sure what motherboard you have so yes check if you can run a CPU as fast as that before you buy.

Hi, that is the purpose of this thread, to see what is the best cpu I can get with the following motherboard http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...ail.php?UID=45

ok your stuck at 400mhz, so thats quad pumped 100mhz. Meaning the whole system is slow, really slow.

Being honest, I've never felt the system being any slower than any other new pc I've tried. I don't play games though, i only use it for internet, music, etc... I think I understand what you mean though. Strange that they should have chosen this cpu with that motherboard or vice versa.

Are you sure you had a 2.53Ghz P4? The CPU support list for the motherboard link you posted shows none of the P4s with a 533Mhz bus being supported.

    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=45&kind=1

So, either that is not your motherboard, or your CPU is not 2.53Ghz.

Maybe this is actually your motherboard???

    http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=MS-6533EG-LM&class=mb

If so, the 3.06 Ghz P4 will work. BTW, there are no 3.066Ghz P4s with 800 Mhz FSB. It has to be a 533Mhz bus.

Hi, the motherboard i mentioned is correct. It has it stamped on the mobo itself. It also matches the description and pic perfectly. The cpu is also correct as I have it in front of me... type SL6D8.

Can I show you this link http://www.pcupgrade.co.uk/productdetails.asp?ProductID=154&categoryid=102

    and this one... http://www.microdirect.co.uk/productinfo.aspx?ProductID=10716

    Cheers though for replying.

The product description on that website is wrong. It is actually a 3.0 Ghz processor. If you go to intel.com and look at this page, specifically:

    http://indigo.intel.com/compare_cpu/default.aspx?familyID=1

You will not find a 3.06 Ghz processor with an 800Mhz fsb. It just isn't possible. The processor speed HAS to be a multiple of the front side bus. 3.066Ghz is not a multiple of 800Mhz.

I also stand by my other statements. If the SL6D8 is your processor, then that is not your motherboard. (or you are running the processor with a 400Mhz fsb, or you've got your system overclocked. In either case your processor wouldn't be running at 2.53Ghz) The motherboard you linked to does NOT support 533Mhz processors. It only supports 400Mhz processors. Most likely, you have the motherboard I linked to earlier which has a very similar model number and you got them confused:
    http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=MS-6533EG-LM&class=mb

So, in order to determine if the 3.066 Ghz 533Mhz bus processor will work, we'll need to find out your motherboard model number.

omg if it is 400mhz get the 2.8 and be done with it.

Only trying to get some advice thanks, there's no obligation for you to get involved in every thread. Don't really think that it's doing any harm trying to find something knew about my PC.

Wyatt_Earp, I understand what you are saying, but the motherboard you link not only looks different but describes features that mine doesn't have, it is definitely the other one... and the chip is definitely SL6D8. I decided to buy a P4 2.8ghz 512/533 which I will be fitting this afternoon, hopefully trouble free. Thanks to all for offering any assitance.

Well, good luck. But, if that is truly your motherboard, that processor will NOT run at 2.8Ghz. It will probably run at about 2.2Ghz.

Secondly, the motherboard you linked to and the one that I linked to look identical except for the heatsink support around the processor socket.

Third, why did you come here if you didn't actually want any help.
